For the first time on camp, the players were given a day off. They’ve been put through their paces already and with another two big training days coming up after this, they were given a chance to relax for the day.

Across the group, there aren’t many grand plans. Some intend to use the downtime to recharge on the beach. Others get on the scooters scattered across the island to go and explore. During the day, plenty of the players are seen frequenting the coffee shops near the hotel and at night, they head out for food. Some of the coaching staff go for a gym session of their own and book in a game of Padel.

Given that, I didn’t see much of the players today, so rather than pad out this diary instalment, I’ve decided to jot down some of the quirks within camp.

The comedy duo
Every club has one and at Hull KR, it’s Dave Hodgson and Danny Ward. The pair would appear to be the practical jokers of the group and even have a meeting about some skits they have planned with the video analyst, James Deighton. Clearly, they take their role very seriously.

The walking challenge
Plenty of the conversations between off-field staff this week have been dominated by an in-house competition. This month, a number of Hull KR's backroom staff have entered a league that is determined by the number of steps they do each day. Let me tell you, this hasn't been done half-heartedly. There is a comprehensive document explaining the rules, there is a fixture list for the entire series as individuals go up against each other every day. At 10 PM every day, results must be delivered, with proof, to a group chat. It will end with a play-off series to determine the ultimate stepper.

Watching it unfold has been quite humourous at times, with everyone trying to keep an eye on what the others are doing. I have been subtly pulled to one side by several members of staff tasked with finding out how many steps their opponent for the day has done. I even got a text from someone back in the UK asking to get some step counts on the down low.

None of the staff know I've been on these secret missions, though they do now!

Super League's Tenerife Takeover
Just in case my bosses are reading this, I'd just like to make them aware that it would be well worth their time putting me up in Tenerife for the whole of January.

Rovers leave on Monday but once they do, the T3 sporting complex that has accommodated them will soon have another rugby league club using their facilities. As Hull KR return to the UK, Wakefield Trinity are thought to be on the very same plane heading back the other way. Once Wakefield have had their time in Costa Adeje, Warrington Wolves make their way over. And once they're done, it's Wigan's turn.

Tenerife Top Training has proven to be a popular facility for Super League clubs and it's not hard to see why. It's a great facility in an ideal location. And if work do see the value in having a reporter on the ground, I suppose I would sign up.

Big days ahead
The next two days are set to be big days on camp. Rovers will meet at 6:30 tomorrow and have one of their biggest sessions of the entire trip planned. Rovers are known to train tough and the next two days are somewhere near as intense as it gets.
