Ian Wright fumes over Aston Villa decision as Roy Keane makes 'weak' comment

Ian Wright was left stunned by the decision from the officials to award Aston Villa a corner kick against West Ham United in the second half of their FA Cup tie on Friday night - a corner which would lead to Amadou Onana's equaliser. Villa advanced into the fourth round of the competition after coming from behind to beat the Irons 2-1 in Graham Potter's first game in charge of the visitors.

Lucas Paqueta opened the scoring for the away side early into the game as Villa rather underwhelmed in the opening 45 minutes, but they responded through substitute Onana - only on the pitch after Ross Barkley pulled up and was forced off in the first half - and then proceeded to win the game through Morgan Rogers.

The passage of play which led to Onana's leveller was admittedly dubious; what appeared to be a harmless, wayward strike from the Belgian while in the penalty area ended up nearer the corner flag than Lukasz Fabianski's goal, but the officials believed they spotted a phantom deflection. A corner was given and Villa took advantage, much to the bemusement of pundit and former West Ham striker Wright.

"The referee and assistant have totally messed up with that corner," Wright told ITV Football. "I can't believe it. The referee is standing right there. It's gone through a gap of people and he's not seen it. There's no-one near it! How can you get that one wrong? West Ham were in this, yes they had to defend a little bit more because Villa got on top. They tried to defend the corner. It's such a shame, really."

Roy Keane, meanwhile, criticised West Ham midfielder Paqueta for going to ground at the back post, after a tussle with Ezri Konsa at the back post. Paqueta went down clutching his face as the corner was swung in for what looked like a pretty innocuous battle between the pair. Keane wasn't having any of it.

"There were a lot of players going down too easy tonight. Then to go down and stay down while your team are defending a set-piece...not good enough. That's really weak," Keane added. "It's a great reaction [from Onana]. We know he's a threat at set-pieces. The delivery was a bit better from Villa in the second half and, once they got their noses in front, they had the momentum and it was going to be tough for West Ham."
