Ian Wright has claimed it will take a ‘calamitous mistake’ from Liverpool to not win the Premier League title this season.

The Reds maintained its six-point gap at the top of the Premier League table over the weekend as it beat Bournemouth 2-0 on Saturday, just over 24 hours before Arsenal’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Manchester City.

While the Gunners were ecstatic about the nature of that win, and are now 14 games unbeaten in the Premier League, there’s still a sense catching Liverpool could be beyond the north London club.

It has perhaps taken the shine somewhat off what was a statement victory for Mikel Arteta over his former boss and Wright, the ex-Arsenal striker, said the pressure remains on Liverpool given its early advantage.

“You have to hope,” the 61-year-old said during Premier League Production’s post-match analysis. “Today’s result, Liverpool will look and say ‘that’s a good result for you’ - 5-1 against City, of course you’re going to think that’s pretty impressive.

“But Liverpool are very much in command of their own destiny now. They’ve got players who are experienced at this level of the season. They know how to finish off a season like this and they’ve got very young players who are coming through as well.

“You just feel like it’s going to take a calamitous mistake from Liverpool for it to happen. At the same time, Arsenal just have to keep doing that. Just keep beating teams and then if it does happen they have got to be ready to take the chance.”

Arsenal recorded an emphatic 5-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Wright’s comments echo those of Declan Rice, who said after Sunday’s game that Arsenal will need to rely on help from other sides. “Liverpool are still quite far in front, especially with the game in hand and with them winning yesterday, we know going into the game that we have to win these games,” the England international told Sky Sports.

“But as the manager says, we’ll be there and we’ll keep pushing. We do need other teams and Liverpool, credit to them, they’ve been really good so far and have top players. It’s down to us to hunt them.

“They’ve put themselves in this position and respect to them, but we know the goal we have which is to hunt them down and to win the Premier League. There’s still a long way to go and so many games to go. We have to stay positive, take each game as it comes and I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Arsenal now faces a two-week gap in the Premier League, with its next match at Leicester City on Saturday 15 February. The Reds will be in action before then, as the rearranged Merseyside derby is set to take place on 12 February.
