Illan Meslier’s Sunderland taunt and Farke’s celebration slip in Leeds United moments missed
It’s a night that will live in the memory and one that could be seismic in Leeds United’s season. There are sliding-door moments in every campaign and the last-gasp win over Sunderland might be one.
Pascal Struijk’s headers sent Elland Road into raptures with United not only going back to the top of the table but also seven points clear of the play-offs. Leeds had to show their character, having been 1-0 down up until the 78th minute before two inspired substitutions from Daniel Farke did the business.
Joe Rothwell produced the best two deliveries of the evening at just the right time for fellow second-half on-comer Struijk to head home. In a joyfully chaotic ending, here are three things you may have missed.

Meslier taunts away fans
Illan Meslier is perhaps the unsung hero of the night given his highlights came inside the first couple of minutes. The goalkeeper did well to get down to Jobe Bellingham’s low curling effort before getting up quickly to block the follow-up from Patrick Roberts.
That double save turned out to be very important. He could not do much about Wilson Idisor’s opener, which marked the first goal he had conceded at Elland Road since New Year’s Day.
Since his blunder away at Hull City a few days later, Meslier had kept six straight clean sheets and has responded to his errors in the best way. His mistake against Sunderland back in October was one of those mishaps and might have been in the back of his mind.
He thoroughly enjoyed the winning goal and celebrated by cupping his ears to the travelling fans, who had been the ones celebrating late on at the Stadium Of Light four months ago. How sweet a moment it must have been.
Farke’s slip-up
That the normally cool-and-collected Farke showed such emotion upon the winner only added to the last-gasp delight. The manager ran onto the pitch in ecstasy and soon found himself with his back on the turf before being helped up by Josuha Guilavogui.
The 48-year-old appeared to slip on the grass as he, like everyone else of Leeds persuasion inside Elland Road, exploded with joy. He was by no means the only one, with players slipping during the game after the pitch was heavily watered by the sprinklers before kick-off.
That would have been the last thing on the mind though, as Farke jumped for joy and embraced his players and coaches. He picked up a yellow card for encroaching onto the pitch which means he faces a touchline ban against Sheffield United next Monday. Bah humbug.
Real-time problem solving
It is not an unusual occurrence to see Jayden Bogle and Daniel James in conversation during a prolonged stoppage of play as they talk through tactics and movements. This was particularly apt on Monday, though.
Enzo Le Fee had managed to get in behind Bogle early on, which ultimately led to Meslier’s double save. Bogle and James had a lengthy chat when Trai Hume had gone down injured and that was the end of Le Fee’s productivity.
Bogle soon returned the favour to Sunderland’s January recruit and sent him for a hotdog with some quick body movement before hassling him to concede the ball in the corner.
James initially had come back to help Bogle out when Le Fee had the ball but this stopped after the first 20 minutes, with Bogle learning from his early warning and keeping Le Fee pocketed for the rest of the match. He undoubtedly won that battle.
