'I'm just so delighted' - Jack Taylor talks through his last-gasp winner at Wolves
Jack Taylor has spent the last few weeks and months ticking off milestones.
A midfielder who has played as low as the National League, he has reached the top flight and become a senior international. Last weekend, he earned his first Premier League start. This weekend, he scored his first goal at the level.
It wasn’t just any goal. In the final seconds of their game away at Wolves, the Blues won a corner with the scores level at 1-1. Jack Clarke’s delivery found the head of Taylor in the middle, totally unmarked, allowing him to win the match in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
“I can’t really remember it, if I’m being honest,” he said about his winner. “I wasn’t being picked up and the ref did say that he’d blow regardless of what happens, so I thought I’d go in and try and get my head on it.
“Thankfully, I’m unmarked. I’ve watched it back for the first time and it’s quite a good leap, to be fair.
“Thankfully it’s gone in.”
Taylor has spoken about the aforementioned milestones, but asked whether he imagined if his first goal would look quite like this, he replied: “No, but I think that’s probably the best picture that you could paint, scoring a last-minute winner like that.
“I’m just so delighted. I can’t wait to call my family when I get on the bus.”
Taylor launched himself towards the away fans at the end of the match – an incredible celebration that carried on after the full-time whistle and into the dressing room. Even the mixed zone was filled with excited Ipswich players celebrating the result during the post-match warm-down exercises.
“They have been bumping me around,” he chuckled. “There have been great celebrations in there, and all the lads deserve it, no matter if it was me or one of the other lads scoring.
“Obviously, I’m buzzing that it’s me. I like to take it on and hopefully I’ll score many more.”
The magnitude of the game adds to the overall feeling around the goal. This was seen by many as a relegation six-pointer, a game between two sides at the bottom of the division with the same number of points.
Taylor, however, said that his side had worked hard to block the outside noise.
“We knew that there was a big narrative around this game, whether it was a six-pointer, blah, blah, blah, all that sort of stuff,” he admitted.
“We seemed to cut that all out and just focus on our job. The way we played today, especially in the first half, I think we dominated the game, especially away from home at a place like that. We knew it’d get hostile if we took the ball away from them.
“Credit to all the boys, the way we played. We showed really good quality throughout the 90 minutes.
“To be honest, overall looking at it, I think that – apart from their little spells – we deserved the three points.”
The game itself was far from a classic. It wasn’t an open, free-flowing clash with loads of chances and goalmouth action.
Like Ipswich’s away win at Tottenham, it was scrappy, and Taylor explained that they had to manage it well to take the points.
“They chucked loads of forwards on towards the end and they have obviously got lots of quality in the top end of the pitch,” he said.
“We had to dial in and keep our defensive shape well, but also to show our bits on the ball. When they are bringing attackers on, it leaves gaps in their defensive structure.
“We did that really well, especially leading up to the corner where we scored. We had a really good passage of play and I feel like we deserved it.”
Town’s players have been adamant for a long time that a victory has been coming. They performed well against Bournemouth last week but fell apart late on. Today, they were on the right side of things.
“We knew this league was going to be fine margins,” Taylor stated. “Unfortunately we have come up against it in the last three or four games.
“We’re delighted for it to go in the other end. Another dangerous set piece, which we have been good at lately. We have been doing a lot of work on the training pitch.
“We knew it was going to be fine margins. Thankfully it’s gone our way today.”
This win gives Ipswich a chance to kick on, but they won’t have too long to celebrate it. Newcastle United visit Portman Road next weekend, with two huge games against Arsenal and Chelsea coming up after Christmas.
“That’s what we want, that’s what the squad wants,” Taylor argued. “There are going to be changes and everyone is going to be needed at some point. It’s a good thing for everyone in my opinion.
“We’re looking forward to it. We’ve got a tough set of fixtures just past Christmas, but we’re looking forward to it.
“It’s what we become professionals for, games like this.”
I had one final question for Taylor – a big one. Where does that goal rank in terms of the biggest moments in his career?
“Number one, number one,” he smiled. “It has to be.”
