I'm old school but Arne Slot just made a Liverpool mistake

It was really disappointing to see Liverpool get knocked out of the FA Cup by Plymouth Argyle. The performance was not up to scratch.

I can see where Arne Slot is coming from in picking the side that he did, but in my opinion, it was a mistake. Look, we all make mistakes, but I think he should have had the cavalry on the bench. Just to come on for 15-20 minutes at the end if needed to try and change it, but it is what it is.

We’ve got to take it on the chin. We didn’t deserve anything and Plymouth fully deserved everything that they got. It’s not Arne’s fault. When the team goes over the white line, that’s it. They let him down.

It was a stonewall penalty, we can have no complaints. You can’t go up with your hands in the air. It’s a lesson, not just for Harvey Elliott but for all of the players.

It’s hard, it's the spur of the moment. You don’t think it’s going to hit your hands. He’s put his hands up and unfortunately it’s hit them. He doesn’t mean it but in the modern day it’s a penalty, it’s as easy as that.

I will reiterate, I am a dinosaur. I love the FA Cup. Loved playing in it, loved winning it. Growing up, it was the most important cup competition around. But times change and that’s not the case anymore.

I’m not going to single out any individuals as it was a team failing. I’ve been there, I’ve been there a few times.

When I was at Oxford, we got beat in the FA Cup by Aldershot - 3-0 away - and I was accused by people of not trying. I was in the process of joining Liverpool and people accused me of not trying. But that’s rubbish. Take it from me, I ran my socks off.

It’s just one of those days where nothing clicks. No-one had that bit of ingenuity to get a goal for us. It is what it is - too many off days at the same time.

We’ve just got to move on. A number of players didn’t deliver but I don’t think it was from lack of trying.

You look at Chiesa, he kept on running, he kept on going. I’ve been in that situation myself. I remember one of my first games for Real Sociedad, we played Real Oviedo away and got thumped 5-0. I remember thinking, ‘what the hell?’

It was only my second or third game and I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe what happened. But I ran my socks off, it was just one of those games. Sometimes, mad things happen. They just wanted it more all those years ago, and Plymouth wanted it more on Sunday.

Gutted for Gomez

I’m gutted for Joe Gomez. He has just been so unlucky with injuries. It just keeps happening to him. It’s on him all the time, the lad needs a break.

I thought he had it last year where he got a run of games but obviously he’s been so unlucky.

He’s such a lovely, genuine fella. I just hope it’s nothing serious.

I’ve seen quite a bit of Trent Kone-Doherty, he looks like a real livewire. It was a result to forget for Liverpool, but it’s a proud day for him and Mabaya, making their debuts.

They’re all good players, the young lads. The thing is you’ve got to step up when the time comes. I think when the kids are concerned, from 16-18 years old is massive.

By the time you get to 18 and are banging on the door to the first team, you have to be ready. You have to be ready to make an impact for the first team more or less.

Trent, Curtis and Quansah have all done it before and shown them the way. You’ve got to be ready at that age, to show you can be named on the bench and cope. You’ve got to be knocking on the door.

Wembley still awaits

At least we’re going to Wembley once this season. It would have been nice to go twice or even three times.

With Arsenal and Chelsea already getting knocked out of the FA Cup, it’s really only Man City that probably could have stopped us. No other team could have stopped us getting to Wembley again so getting knocked out like we did is a massive missed opportunity.

It’s the most disappointing thing for me. All the other teams left in the cup, we’re perfectly capable of beating all of them on any given day.

That hurts more than anything. The door was open for another good run in the cup.

But we’ll enjoy our trip to Wembley for the League Cup final. I hope we enjoy it as much as we did the last one because that was a great day out with all the kids stepping up when called upon.
