Incoming Derby County transfer needed as frustration evident amid big concern
Derby County crashed out of the FA Cup to League One Leyton Orient as they lost 6-5 on a penalty shootout at Brisbane Road.
Callum Elder was the unfortunate victim in the shootout as he saw his effort saved by Josh Keeley. Derby had initially fought back from a goal down in the first half when Dajaune Brown cancelled out Charlie Kelman's excellent finish.
Orient had been in excellent form coming into the game and they certainly reflected the confidence sweeping through Brisbane Road as they made a fast start. Diallang Jaiyesimi produced an overhead kick which just cleared the Rams' bar which Orient fans greeted to much acclaim. Jamie Donley then saw an effort turned behind for a corner which the visitors dealt with.

At the other end, Kane Wilson teased in a couple of decent crosses before Orient took the lead when Derby failed to clear a set-piece which allowed Charlie Kelman to produce a ruthless finish. But that lead did not last long as Derby were back on level terms with an excellent team goal, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing combining with Marcus Harness who crossed low for Brown to equalise.
Orient tried to force themselves back in front and Nat Phillips had to make an excellent tackle to deny Sonny Perkins while Omar Beckles lashed over the bar. And just before half-time, Mendez-Laing had a good chance at the back post but headed straight at Josh Keeley.
Derby made a double change in the second half as Ebou Adams and Elder came on to replace Phillips and Liam Thompson. But it was Corey Blackett-Taylor who went closest to adding to the scoreline when his razor sharp drive was tipped over the bar by Keeley. Kenzo Goudmijn then fired wide of the target from outside the box.
Another Keeley save denied Blackett-Taylor before Wilson was in the right place to deny Jaiyesimi. Substitute Tom Barkhuizen rattled the bar with a deflected effort as Derby kept pushing for a breakthrough.
The game went into extra time as neither side could find a winner inside 90 minutes, but both players were growingly increasingly tired. Jamie Donely snuck in behind Derby's defence but he was flagged offside before Goudmijn saw a shot saved by Keeley. A penalty shootout loomed and it was Elder who was the victim as his penalty was saved by Keeley as the Os booked an FA Cup date with Manchester City.
A poor night
There are far better teams than Derby that have lost FA Cup games through a penalty shootout and Callum Elder will not be the first player to have missed a decisive spot-kick. It comes with the territory, and at least he was brave enough to put his head above the parapet to take one.
But the real issue here was the lack of genuine threat once the likes of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Corey Blackett-Taylor had to be replaced. There was also a lack of bite in the centre of midfield, not helped by a passive performance from Liam Thompson that saw him replaced at half-time.
Paul Warne tried to jazz up the frontline when he turned to the bench, but a lack of a cutting edge was a real problem in the latter stages of the second half and throughout extra time. In fairness, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom was rarely called into action at the other end, but the problems in the final third are a real issue. You can see evidence of frustration with the performance when Kenzo Goudmijn and Ebou Adams start gesticulating with each other as Derby struggled to open up a stubborn Orient defence.
Orient rightfully celebrated their victory as they banked a home tie against Manchester City in the next round and Derby fell victim to another side further down the pyramid for the second time this season. But they only have themselves to blame following a performance that, particularly late on, lacked creative quality and that was a big concern.
Subs make no impact
With Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Corey Blackett-Taylor complaining of tightness, Derby had to turn to the substitutes' bench in the hope they could find a winner. But the truth was that of the changes made, only Ebou Adams really made his presence felt.
Outside of that Kayden Jackson huffed and puffed, James Collins couldn't find a chink in Orient's armour, Tom Barkhuizen did hit the bar with a deflected effort but that was his only serious contribution. Callum Elder unforunately missed a decisive spot-kick in the shootout which is a hazard of the job and could have happened to anyone.
But fundamentally, you turn to the bench to help try to improve the team's performance, but as Warne admitted here, it did not have that affect in what became a slog particulary in extra time when Derby just seemed to run out of ideas in how to break down Orient's defence. You cannot fault their effort, but the the quality isn't there.
Deal should give Rams a lift
All being well, Lars Salvesen should wrap up the formalities of his move to Derby today after the club agreed a deal with Viking FK. His arrival comes at a time when the squad is perhaps in need of a fresh face and particularly in the forward line which has lacked serious competition for places.
While Dajaune Brown excelled last night, Jerry Yates has been left to carry the burden in the Championship but Salvesen is an established centre forward who perhaps ticks Warne's box of wanting a mobile targetman.
It is highly doubtful that he will be thrown straight into the Championship, given that Viking FC's season ended in December so he will need some time to get up to speed. But it is a move that will just give everybody a lift at a time when Derby need it.
Duo catch the eye
There were at least a couple of positives to come out of last night not least the performance of Dajaune Brown and winger Corey Blackett-Taylor. Brown led the line superbly in the absence of Jerry Yates who was rested for the night although will be fit to face Watford at the weekend.
The academy graduate was a real handful for the Orient defence, culminating in a real poacher's finish at the end of an excellent move. Lars Salvesen's impending move will strengthen the depth of strikers available to Warne which may have sparked conversations as to whether Brown moves out on loan for the rest of the season.
It's a difficult decision for Derby because you sense Brown would seriously benefit from playing every week maybe further down the pyramid, but at the same time, he does have something to offer albeit not as a guaranteed starter in the Championship. But the forward is developing nicely and it will be interesting to see what path he takes this month because has no shortage of admirers in League One and Two.
While he was undoubtedly a bonus, so too was Corey Blackett-Taylor who can count himself unfortunate not to have joined Brown on the scoresheet courtesy of two excellent saves from the goalkeeper. He had to be replaced in the second half because he said he was tightening up. Warne said he had to make the change to avoid a damaging injury, but there was no dispute that when he went off, Derby's cutting edge started to dissipate and was perhaps a significant moment in the game.
