India v England LIVE: Cricket score and result as Tom Hartley takes seven wickets to seal historic Test win
England secured a famous Test win over India on the fourth day in Hyderabad after another thrilling day’s play.
Ollie Pope laid the foundations for an incredible comeback with his stunning second-innings 196, which came to an end as he attempted an audacious ramp shot to bring up his double ton. It left India needing 231 to win, but England’s debutant spinner Tom Hartley struck early with four quick wickets to dent the hosts’ chase. Joe Root picked up two wickets either side of a stunning piece of fielding from Ben Stokes that turned the tide firmly in the favour of the visitors.
India fought to the bitter end as they sought to avoid defeat in the first of this five Test series, but it was left to Hartley, who took his seventh wicket of the innings to clinch a memorable 28-run victory.

Bazball England smash more records in historic victory among their greatest ever triumphs
Sunday 28 January 2024 14:02 , Sonia Twigg
Tom Hartley spun England to a historic 28-run victory in the first Test match against India at Hyderabad, in what will be remembered as an all-time great result for any touring side.
India boast a formidable record in home conditions, especially on a turning track, but debutant Hartley claimed seven wickets for 62 as the hosts were bowled out for 202, 28 runs short on a thrilling fourth day of the Test.
Before the series, India had lost just three of their previous 46 home Test matches, and no side had won a single game there since Australia at Pune in 2017, while the last series victory was Sir Alastair Cook’s England side back in 2012-13.

Ollie Pope’s reaction after England’s win
Sunday 28 January 2024 13:15 , Sonia Twigg
Ollie Pope: “To come here - probably the hardest place for a batter to come at the minute - to start a series like this, and to do it in a winning shoulders is heads and shoulders above the other four (Pope’s innings was his 5th Test century).
“I think first up I was at peace with being out caught slip like I was in the first, I was focused on covering the inside edge with my pad, I knew that was the real danger ball and if you edge it it’s still got to carry and they’ve still got to catch it.
“I maintained that mindset and really wanted to be positive with my sweeping and my reverse-sweeping as well.”

Debutant Tom Hartley delivered one of the greatest overseas wins in England’s history, claiming a magnificent seven to down India in the first Test at Hyderabad and complete a classic comeback.
Earlier in the match Hartley had seen his first ball as a Test cricketer launched for six but he showed huge reserves of steel to bounce back with stunning figures of seven for 62 in the fourth innings to seal a dramatic 28-run victory.

Ben Stokes’ reaction after England’s historic win
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:50 , Sonia Twigg
Stokes on Hartley: “Tom came into the squad for the first time, he’s had a lot of confidence with that, and the gameplan is that this is going to be a long tour, and this is going to be a long game and I was willing to give him the long spell there regardless of what happened because I knew that I would have to turn there again throughout this Test match and allowing him to have a longer spell at the start was almost just a justification for telling him before the game started that this was going to happen.
“Whether that was the reason he went on to take seven wickets and win us the game this innings, who knows but that was the whole point for us behind it was selecting the people and backing them and not going back on your word.”
Ben Stokes reaction to historic England victory
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:45 , Sonia Twigg
On selecting an inexperienced spin attack: “To be perfectly honest with you it was my first time being in charge of the team and being captain in these conditions and I’m not going to lie - I might not seem it - but I am a great observer of the game.
“I learned a lot from our first innings in the field, I watched a lot of how the Indian spinners operate the field and tried to take a lot of that into our innings here when we obviously had to bowl them out and I think that might have been pretty obvious but just absolutely thrilled for everyone involved.
“Tom Hartley on debut to come in and get 9 wickets throughout the whole game, Pope first game back after shoulder surgery, it was an incredible effort by everyone and I think everyone’s contributions were good.”
Result: England win by 28 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:35 , Sonia Twigg
Rohit Sharma: “Cricket has been played for four days, so it’s hard to pinpoint where it went wrong, obviously having got a lead of 190 we thought we were very much in the game, but then exceptional batting, probably one of the best that I have seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter.”
England win by 28 runs - Ben Stokes hails greatest triumph of captaincy
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:32 , Sonia Twigg
Ben Stokes: “I think since I’ve taken the captaincy up, we’ve obviously had some fantastic moments as a team, we’ve had a lot of great victories and we’ve been involved in some amazing games, but I think where we are and who we’re playing against I think this victory I think is 100 percent our greatest triumph since I became captain.”

We will be bringing reaction from man of the match Ollie Pope and winning captain Ben Stokes.
Result: England win by 28 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:30 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley on what he has learned: “I realised I didn’t have to bowl as fast as I thought, I realised I could take my time a bit.
“Especially watching Jadeja and Ashwin, I realised that we could take our time a little bit, the new ball didn’t quite spin as much so changing lines and then the ball started to spin a little bit more.”
Result: England win by 28 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:23 , Sonia Twigg
On Ben Stokes’ captaincy, Hartley said: “There’s never a dull moment to be honest, I’m always looking round and thinking ‘is there a fielder there, there wasn’t last ball’ but that’s just the Stokes way and we’ve all bought into it and we have come out on top today, so it’ working.”
When asked if his batting helped inspire his second bowling innings, the 25-year-old said: “I was really nervous to start but getting a few runs always helps so it put my nerves at ease a little bit and I found out a little bit about the pitch which helped as well.”
Result: England win by 28 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:17 , Sonia Twigg
When asked about the first innings, Hartley said his feeling were: “This is hard work. It was really tough out there, it didn’t spin quite as much as we thought, but a testament to the coaches and Stokes and Baz (Brendon McCullum), they really got around me and I lost no confidence really and I was able to come out and do my best out here.”
On the changing room, he said: “It’s fantastic, in that dressing room you can have a great day or you can have a really bad day and it’s the same vibe in there, they’re always ultra-positive.
“It’s just a fantastic dressing room and one of the best I’ve been in to be honest.”
Result: England win by 28 runs

Tom Hartley is the first to speak to the world feed: “It’s unbelievable, it’s not going to sink in for a while I think. I’m just over the moon to be honest.”
When asked if his family were there: “No actually I don’t think they’ve done much else today, I think they’ll be sat around the TV.”
Result: England win by 28 runs

First up, here are some quotes from the BBC’s cricket correspondent, Jonathan Agnew: “This is one of the most extraordinary results you will find, particularly in India. For India to have had a convincing lead of 190 on first innings and to lose the match by 28 runs is extraordinary. It really is. It’s unprecedented, I guess. It’s been an absolute thriller.”

Stay tuned for all the reaction from Hyderabad as India suffer their first Test defeat since a loss to Australia in Pune in 2017.
Result: England win by 28 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:06 , Sonia Twigg
England have done something that will go down in the history books. India have not lost a Test match at home since 2017, they took risks in choosing two inexperienced spinners, but they chose the tall release point of Hartley, stuck with him after a poor first-innings and reaped the rewards.
To come from behind after India were utterly dominant in the first innings, with Ollie Pope spearheading the fightback with his 196, forming partnerships all the way down the order to set India 231 to win.
England never gave up, such is the faith shown in them by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, they always believed they could produce something, and Hartley spun them to victory, taking seven wickets for 62, as the visitors won by 28 runs.
Wicket! Siraj out 12! st Foakes b Hartley - England win by 28 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:02 , Sonia Twigg
A rush of blood to the head and England win! Siraj rushes down the pitch to try and hit Hartley and is stumped by Foakes!
England win by 28 runs and that was an exceptional Test match.
India 202-9 - need 29 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 12:00 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley will bowl the last over of the day.
India 202-9 (69) Bumrah 6, Siraj 12, Wood 0-15 (8) - need 29 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:58 , Sonia Twigg
The first ball carves up Siraj, who was caught on the crease there but bounced over the stumps. Wood kicks the ball onto the stumps in an attempted run out after fielding the ball with the field spread.
Bumrah was well safe, but a nice bit of improvisation. The next ball he fields and taps onto the stumps at the non-strikers end, but Siraj was unmoved.
Bumrah shovels the ball into the leg side for a single.
This is Test cricket at its best. Exciting and with both results possible as the sun sets.
India 199-9 - need 32 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:54 , Sonia Twigg
Change of pace and Mark Wood will come back on to try and force the final wicket. Around eight minutes remaining.
England need just one wicket. There is a brief pause as the batters add on extra protection with the return of the fast bowler.
India 199-9 (68) Bumrah 5, Siraj 12, Hartley 6-62 (26) - India need 32 to win.
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:53 , Sonia Twigg
Siraj goes big into the deep and it has gone for four, was that a catching chance? Rehan Ahmed was the man on the boundary but he couldn’t get there.
Another stumping appeal sent upstairs, Siraj dragged forwards but the foot did not lift up off the ground. A no ball from Hartley and the total needed is down to 32.
A relatively expensive over, eight runs from it.
India 191-9 (67) Bumrah 5, Siraj 5, Rehan 0-33 (6) - need 40 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:48 , Sonia Twigg
This is completely gripping. And the bounce is becoming a bit more unpredictable, some of Rehan’s have bounced up and some kept low.
Bumrah goes big down the ground and Bairstow hits one down the ground for two. It was the only runs from the over.
India 190-9 (66) Bumrah 3, Siraj 5, Hartley 6-54 (25) - need 42 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:45 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley will have another. Bumrah goes for a sweep and misses it, but the ball also narrowly misses the stumps.
After that almost-wicket, he goes for the solid forward defence to the next one.
Stokes brings in another catcher at short mid-on. Bumrah again defends down the pitch.
Foakes appeals for a stumping and there will be another check. Bumrah did jump in the air, but Foakes just whipped the bails off a split second after he landed. A good appeal from the wicketkeeper.
India 186-9 (65) Bumrah 2, Siraj 3, Rehan 0-31 (5) - India need 43 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:41 , Sonia Twigg
Stokes turns to Rehan Ahmed, he has not bowled a lot this innings, and when he has he has been expensive, but runs might not be an issue and he almost brings a wicket almost immediately when Siraj goes for a flash and it just falls short of the fielder at third man.
The next one goes to Ben Duckett again in that position, and again on the bounce. England move the field around.
Foakes is quick with the gloves to take the bails off, and this will be sent upstairs by the umpire for stumping.
The ball flicks off the pads for four, leg byes signalled. Six runs from the over.
India 182-9 (64) Bumrah 2, Siraj 3, Hartley 6-53 (24) - need 49 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:37 , Sonia Twigg
Siraj adds two more runs to the total. Just one needed for England. Ashwin did not have faith in Bumrah and tried to take it on himself, now it is down to the two seamers to see if there is one more twist left in this match.
Bumrah edges it into vacant gully and will pick up two runs.
A wicket and five runs from the over.
Wicket! Ashwin out for 28! st Foakes b Hartley - India 177-9
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:32 , Sonia Twigg
There will be half an hour more! Eight overs or half an hour more of today. Can England take the wickets in time?
Hartley has a five-fer already on Test debut, will he be able to make it six?
And Ashwin has gone! He tried to come down the wicket and go after Hartley and has been stumped by Ben Foakes!
India 177-8 (63) Ashwin 28, Bumrah 0, Root 1-40 (19) - need 54 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:30 , Sonia Twigg
Without the extra half an hour, there are two overs remaining. But the umpires can grant that if they feel it will lead to a result.
Root will continue. Ashwin bat and pad in the air, but it drops safe. All the late drama in Hyderabad.
The field is coming in for Ashwin to prevent a single, but he can get it, and Root has one ball to go at Bumrah.
Bumrah crouches as low as he can to smother the ball.
Wicket! Bharat is out for 28! b Hartley - India 176-8
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:25 , Sonia Twigg
Ashwin pulls out as Hartley was almost into his delivery stride, was there a bit of mind games in that?
Hartley does find the edge but the ball squirts away along the ground and India will pick up another couple of runs.
The ball is soft now, and wickets seem harder to come by. They needed 112 when Ashwin came out to bat.
And Hartley has struck to claim his five-fer on debut!
That ball was just too good for Bharat, he went down to play the ball down the line and it just turned and caught the stumps.
India 172-7 (61) Bharat 28, Ashwin 23, Leach 1-32 (10) - need 58 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:20 , Sonia Twigg
Leach’s first ball has been called a wide because it has turned too much! A single follows.
Ashwin is not taking any risks now.
One bounces and turns and it has to be stopped on the boundary by Rehan Ahmed. Ashwin does scores a four the next ball and that takes the partnership between this two up over 50.
Leach does not look entirely comfortable bowling here and I wonder if that injury is causing some problems.
Three overs left today.
India 164-7 (60) Bharat 27, Ashwin 17, Root 1-40 (18) - need 67 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:15 , Sonia Twigg
Root will come back in to try and get another wicket. England are running out of time to finish this today.
And it’s worth remembering that Root took the important wicket of KL Rahul when the Indian batter was trapped on the back foot.
The current partnership which had taken an age to reach 25, is suddenly creeping up towards 50.
India 160-7 (59) Bharat 24, Ashwin 16, Rehan 0-28 (4) - need 71 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:10 , Sonia Twigg
Bharat takes on Rehan, and will be rewarded with another boundary, India are really trying to keep the leg-spinner out of the attack, and Stokes might be forced into a change.
That is the first six of the innings!
Another 10 runs have been ticked away and there will be five more overs of play today.
India 155-7 (58) Bharat 20, Ashwin 15, Hartley 4-45 (22) - need 76 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:07 , Sonia Twigg
Bharat is not taking the same attacking attitude he showed against Rehan Ahmed into the next over bowled by Tom Hartley.
There is almost a run out chance! Bharat tucks it towards point and tries to run and was only just sent back in time by Ashwin!
Another edge, but it bounced before reaching Root at slip, he was trying to pull out of the defensive shot when the ball caught the bat which was angled downwards.
A full toss will be punished for two.
India 153-7 (57) Bharat 18, Ashwin 15, Rehan 0-23 (3) - need 78 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:03 , Sonia Twigg
The England fans are making themselves heard up in the stands, but can they force another wicket.
Ahmed turns the ball past the outside edge of Bharat’s bat, and that was not far away from hitting the stumps or catching the edge.
But he cannot sustain it and the next ball is punched away to the cover boundary. The home crowd had been almost silent, but that has got them back on their feet.
The extra bounce brings another four, these are welcome runs for India, catching the back of the bat and taking it over Root at slip.
India 144-7 (56) Bharat 9, Ashwin 15, Hartley 4-43 (21)
Sunday 28 January 2024 11:00 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley will bowl his 21st over of the day. These batters do not seem in any rush to push things on a bit and will want to see out the day, as Ashwin plays the ball back to the bowler.
Ben Stokes will want this done today, and brings Ollie Pope back into silly point.
India 144-7 (55) Bharat 9, Ashwin 15, Rehan 0-14 (2) - need 87 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:57 , Sonia Twigg
Rehan Ahmed is coming back on to bowl, his only other over of this innings was very expensive and went for 13, but both those batters are out and can he make something happen against this new pair who might be less likely to target the teenager?
He has started with a dot, and three players out on the boundary, the next one is also played back to the bowler by Ashwin.
The all rounder does score a single to take the partnership up to 25 runs off 85 deliveries.
There’s a bit of bounce on offer for Ahmed.
India 143-7 (54) Bharat 9, Ashwin 14 Hartley 4-43 (20) - need 88 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:53 , Sonia Twigg
Ashwin goes for a big shot and misses it, the next one he comes down the track and just defends back to the bowler.
Another quiet over, just one run from it, 10 more left in the day.
India 142-7 (53) Bharat 9, Ashwin 13, Wood 0-14 (7) - India need 89 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:50 , Sonia Twigg
Wood is back on, the Barmy Army are up on their feet trying to sing their team home.
One run from the over, and there will be 11 more today, can England get this wrapped up?
India 141-7 (52) Bharat 9, Ashwin 12, Hartley 4-42 (19 - need 90 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:46 , Sonia Twigg
Ashwin goes back to try and cut Hartley and so nearly edges the ball into the hands of Foakes, but he does manage to get a single from the final ball of the over and will keep the strike.
India 140-7 (51) Bharat 9, Ashwin 11, Wood 0-13 (6) - need 91 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:42 , Sonia Twigg
Bharat is struck on the pad by Wood, but it was always going down and brings another run in the form of leg byes.
Ashwin will keep strike and he is already into double figures. Two runs from the over.
India 136-7 (50) Bharat 9, Ashwin 8, Root 1-35 (17) - need 95 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:37 , Sonia Twigg
India did look a bit more attacking in Root’s last over, but have been content to block this time around.
He drags the final ball short to bring two runs from the over.
India 136-7 (49) Bharat 9, Ashwin 8, Wood 0-12 (5) - need 95 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:33 , Sonia Twigg
Wood will have another spell, he has not been used extensively in this innings, but the pitch has become very slow.
In fact, this will be only his fifth over.
The run rate in this session has been just over two an over which will encourage England.
After starting with two dots, Wood’s third ball is just tucked down to fine leg for a single.
India 134-7 (48) Bharat 8, Ashwin 7, Root 1-35 (16) - need 97 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:27 , Sonia Twigg
The batters seem to have come out with a slightly different attitude, have reverse-swept and looked to take on Root.
There are 16 overs left in the day, and England need three more wickets.
An appeal from the final delivery does not tempt Stokes into another review.
Drinks: India 131-7 - need 100 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:21 , Sonia Twigg
After a brief drinks break after the first hour of the session, what an hour it has been. England have taken quick wickets to put themselves firmly in control, but they will want to break this partnership, because Ashwin can be dangerous with the bat.
India 131-7 (47) Bharat 5, Ashwin 7, Leach 1-24 (9) - need 100 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:18 , Sonia Twigg
India have not lost a Test match at home, since a 333-run defeat to Australia at Pune in 2017, but are on the back foot here against England.
The hosts are dealing in a currency of singles, and the current partnership moved on to eight from 37 deliveries.
Although just after saying that, Ashwin has a four, 54 balls from the previous boundary to take the required total to just 100.
India 125-7 (46) Bharat 4, Ashwin 2, Root 1-32 (15) - need 106 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:15 , Sonia Twigg
After a reasonably lengthy spell from Hartley, Stokes makes a change and brings Root back on.
Bharat gets a single off the first ball of the over, but Ashwin has not settled yet, and only has one run from more than 20 deliveries faced.
He does manage to race through for a second. Bharat is tempted into a sweep, but doesn’t get hold of it as it glances off the pad towards fine leg.
India 123-7 (45) Bharat 3, Ashwin 1, Leach 1-18 (8) - need 108 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:10 , Sonia Twigg
England need three more wickets to win, and Leach is not allowing India any free runs, there’s just the one run from that over.
India 122-7 (44) Bharat 2, Ashwin 1, Hartley 4-41 (18) - need 109 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:07 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley continues, Bharat is able to chip another run away with a single.
India 121-7 (43) Bharat 1, Ashwin 1, Leach 1-17 (7) - need 110 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:04 , Sonia Twigg
After a wicket in the previous over, there is no surprises that Leach is going to have another.
India cannot just stay at the crease without scoring runs for any extended period of time, they still need 111, although there is a lot of time left in the game.
One off the over.
India 120-7 (42) Ashwin 1, Bharat 0, Hartley 4-40 (17) - need 111 to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 10:00 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley is into his 17th over and there’s a big appeal from Ben Foakes, Stokes sends this one upstairs for caught behind. He has not hit the ball, and there is no spike on the ultra edge, the crowd are happy, that decision has gone India’s way.
Each side has one review left.
Ashwin goes back and plays one into the off side just past Ollie Pope at silly point and Hartley has bowled another maiden.
India 120-7 (41) Bharat 0, Ashwin 1, Leach 1-16 (6) - need 111 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:56 , Sonia Twigg
Ashwin prods forwards at the start and the ball goes past the outside edge. Another good over from England, just three wickets needed now and they are keeping things tight.
Wicket! Shreyas Iyer out for 13! ct Root b Leach - India 119-7
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:52 , Sonia Twigg
Leach will bowl again, he has only bowled five overs today and might not be fully fit.
And he strikes almost immediately! Shreyas Iyer has played the ball to slip, and has to go for 13!
India 119-6 (40) Shreyas 13, Bharat 0, Hartley 4-40 (16) - need 112 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:49 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley’s second ball of the over spins past the outside edge of the new batter Bharat. The next one doesn’t turn and just holds its line.
This is clever bowling from the Test debutant, and it was a maiden over.
And here is the run out, just in case anyone was in doubt about how good it was.

Root bowls another tight over, and England need just four wickets to win.
Wicket! Jadeja out for 2! run out Stokes - India 119-6
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:42 , Sonia Twigg
Run out! After fumbling the ball a few overs before, Stokes has fired one straight into the stumps while running, that was exceptional fielding!
Jadeja is quick between the wickets and Stokes flung himself towards the ball to stop it and then fling it at the stumps in the same movement, that was an unbelievable piece of work.
India 119-5 (38) Shreyas 13, Jadeja 2, Hartley 4-40 (15) - need 112 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:40 , Sonia Twigg
England are sticking with Hartley. He overpitches one, and Shreyas punishes the full toss.
He had bowled well today and that was a rare loose delivery.
Four runs from the over.
India 115-5 (37) Shreyas 9, Jadeja 2, Root 1-30 (13) - need 116 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:36 , Sonia Twigg
Stokes has fumbled it in the field, but it only brings one more run.
Has Shreyas been dropped? There were cries of catch it as the ball ballooned upwards towards leg slip, but it came off the pad.
India 112-5 (36) Shreyas 7, Jadeja 1, Hartley 4-36 (14) - need 119 runs to win

Jadeja is off the mark with a flicked single into the leg side. The field is a bit more spread to Shreyas Iyer, but the variable bounce ensures an attempted hoik into the leg side will just bring one more run to the total.
Three from the over
India 109-5 (35) Shreyas 5, Jadeja 0, Root 1-27 (12) - need 122 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:30 , Sonia Twigg
Root pulls out of the first ball just before the delivery stride. Every run is being cheered by the India crowd in Hyderabad, who don’t see Test cricket too often.
One run from the over.
India 108-5 (34) Shreyas 4, Jadeja 0, Hartley 4-33 (13) - need 123 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:27 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley will keep going, it was Root who got the last breakthrough, but he is one away from a five-fer on Test debut.
One run from the over.
India 107-5 (33) Shreyas 3, Jadeja 0, Root 1-26 (11) - need 124 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:22 , Sonia Twigg
Jadeja, who batted so well in the first innings comes to the crease, and defends the final two balls of the over.
Wicket! KL Rahul out for 22! lbw Root - India 107-5
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:20 , Sonia Twigg
More runs, this time past the keeper and it will be leg byes. Stokes does not look too happy about that.
There’s a conventional slip and a leg slip in place.
And Root strikes, the umpire’s finger has gone up against KL Rahul for lbw, and he reviews it! Three reds and he has gone, that is just what England needed!
India 102-4 (32) KL Rahul 22, Shreyas 2, Hartley 4-32 (12) - need 129 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:15 , Sonia Twigg
The wickets seem to have changed Hartley, the first one turns and bounces past the outside edge, and the second moves in the same way but keeps low.
Another one completely dies, and unfortunately it has gone through the keeper and will be four byes to bring up the India century.
India 96-4 (31) KL Rahul 22, Shreyas 1, Root 0-25 (10) - need 134 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:12 , Sonia Twigg
Root will bowl at the other end after that crucial breakthrough for England. After the wicket maiden, India still needed 136 runs to win.
KL Rahul taps away a single for the first run since lunch. It does bring the new batter Shreyas Iyer on strike.
A good start from Root, two runs from the over.
Wicket! Axar out for 17! ct and b Hartley - India 95-4
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:06 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley will be the first to bowl for England after the break, he has taken the only wickets so far in a marked improvement from his bowling in the first innings.
And he strikes almost immediately! Patel has just tamely tapped that into the air and back to Hartley who takes the catch!
Tea: India 95-3 - need 136 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 09:02 , Sonia Twigg
If the home can reach the total, it will be the fifth-highest chase in India.
This should be a thrilling contest in the final session, India need runs, England need wickets.
Tea: India 95-3 - need 136 runs to win

Here are some photos from the afternoon session:
Tea: India 95-3 - need 136 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:44 , Sonia Twigg
Well, who could have predicted it? After a slightly nervy performance on debut when he was expensive and inconsistent, Tom Hartley has taken three wickets, including the key wicket of Rohit Sharma to give England a chance going into the final session.
He has bowled well. There is a slight concern over Leach, who has bowled just five overs, and Rehan Ahmed’s single over went for 13 runs.
England do not have a lot of runs to play with, but one more wicket could start to shift the momentum.
Tea: India 95-3 (29) KL Rahul 21, Axar 17 - need 136 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:42 , Sonia Twigg
Root will bowl what will likely be the last over before tea. He is getting some purchase and turn.
Anderson is on the field as a sub-fielder for Mark Wood. Can Root force something to put England on top going into the break?
He has bowled a maiden.
India 95-3 (28) KL Rahul 21, Axar 17, Wood 0-10 (4) - need 136 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:37 , Sonia Twigg
Wood to come over the wicket to KL Rahul. Can he get this ball reverse-swinging? Bumrah caused all sorts of problems for England yesterday, taking the wickets of Duckett and Root at the start of the afternoon session.
England will be hoping for something similar from Wood. The current partnership is up past 30...
Wood’s over went for just one run.
India 94-3 (27) Kl Rahul 20, Axar 17, Rehan 0-13 (1) - need 137 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:33 , Sonia Twigg
Rehan Ahmed will bowl for the first time in this innings as Stokes continues to keep rotating the bowlers regularly.
A delivery was a touch too full from Ahmed and Axar has swung the bat and hit him down the ground for his first boundary, but the next one bounces a lot higher and almost causes problems.
But there’s another overpitches one, and Axar drives it again, this one through extra cover.
A pull shot, and that will be 13 runs from the over.
India 81-3 (26), KL Rahul 19, Axar 5, Wood 0-19 (3) - need 150 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:28 , Sonia Twigg
Wood is putting a lot of effort into these deliveries, but the surface is not giving him anything. Foakes is just waiting for the ball to reach him, despite the ball leaving the hand at over 140 kph.
India 81-3 (25) KL Rahul 19, Axar 5, Hartley 3-31 (10) - need 150 to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:23 , Sonia Twigg
KL Rahul has a boundary, he looked good in the first innings for 86, and has well-controlled the sweep down in the gap between fine leg and deep square leg.
He follows it up with a second, this one is squarer but he gets the same result, the required runs are already down to 150.
Eight runs from the over.
India 73-3 (24) KL Rahul 11, Axar 5, Wood 0-9 (2) - need 158 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:20 , Sonia Twigg
Time for an injection of pace now, Stokes is not letting the batter settle and although his first over went for eight, there was a chance put down by Crawley at second slip.
There are not any clear signs of reverse-swing yet, the ball is not that old.
This over has not been as expensive from Wood, but wickets are all that matter at this stage in the game and England will have to work hard to prevent partnerships building. One run from the over.
India 72-3 (23) KL Rahul 9, Axar 5, Hartley 3-23 (9) - need 159 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:14 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley will come back on to bowl as England keep rotating their bowlers around, although it might be that Leach is not fit enough for any sustained spells.
India 70-3 (22) KL Rahul 9, Axar 4, Root 0-23 (8) - need 161 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:09 , Sonia Twigg
Axar Patel is not taking risks, playing with a very straight bat and pushing the ball along the ground, he is not looking to take any risks, and India cannot afford him to either. There is a lot of time left in this Test match.
India 67-3 (21) KL Rahul 8, Axar 3, Leach 0-15 (5) - need 164 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:07 , Sonia Twigg
Two from Leach’s over, and Stokes is being very active in manipulating the field.
India 65-3 (20) KL Rahul 7, Axar 1, Root 0-20 (7) - need 166 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 08:03 , Sonia Twigg
Root will take over from Hartley. He has his head in his hands as Axar leaves one that just goes straight on and narrowly misses the stumps.
He starts his second spell of the day with a maiden.
India 65-3 (19) KL Rahul 7, Axar 1, Leach 0-13 (4) - need 166 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:59 , Sonia Twigg
Axar Patel has been promoted up the order, potentially with a desire for a right-hand/left-hand combination as India find themselves 63 for three and still needing 168 runs to win.
Just two runs from Leach’s fourth over.
Wicket! Rohit out for 39! lbw Hartley - India 63-3
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:53 , Sonia Twigg
Rohit Sharma has been given out lbw! He has reviewed it...but three reds and he is out!
Tom Hartley has claimed another wicket, and England are in with a serious chance here!
India 63-2 (17) Rohit 39, KL Rahul 6, Leach 0-11 (3) - need 168 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:49 , Sonia Twigg
KL Rahul tucks Leach away into the leg side for a single. A sweep and a reverse sweep have been used by Rohit already, and he has another boundary with the latter.
He follows it up with a second reverse-sweep four the next ball.
India 53-2 (16) Rohit 30, KL Rahul 4, Hartley 2-20 (7) - need 178 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:44 , Sonia Twigg
There will be a brief pause in play as Pope was hit in the helmet while fielding close to the bat and will have to undergo a concussion check with four balls left in Hartley’s seventh over
But pressure is eased with a four from the final ball of the over to bring up the 50 runs for India.
India 48-2 (15) Rohit 26, KL Rahul 4, Leach 0-1 (2) - need 183 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:36 , Sonia Twigg
Leach has started well here, he even managed to get one to turn around the outside edge of Rohit Sharma’s bat.
A maiden for England’s frontline spinner
India 48-2 (14) Rohit 26, KL Rahul 4, Hartley 2-16 (6) - need 183 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:32 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley took two wickets in the last over, but KL Rahul hit the ball aerially but Crawley did not pick it up at all off the bat and Crawley having missed it had to chase it to the boundary.
India 43-2 (13) Rohit 25, KL Rahul 0, Leach 0-1 (1) - need 188 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:27 , Sonia Twigg
Ollie Pope clearly has the magic touch, first with the bat and then with the two catches. And it will be Jack Leach to have a go at the new batter, KL Rahul, taking up Kohli’s preferred position at number four after the Indian talisman pulled out of the first two Test matches of the tour for personal reasons.
Leach starts tidily with just one from his first over of the innings. He will be important for England despite his haematoma on his left knee.
Wicket! Shubman Gill out for 0! ct Pope b Hartley - India 42-2
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:22 , Sonia Twigg
Tom Hartley has another! And again it’s caught Pope at silly point! Gill just fended forwards and Pope takes the catch!
Hartley has struck twice in an over to completely change the course of the innings so far.
Pope goes low and sees the ball into his hands at silly point.
Wicket! Jaiswal out for 15! ct Pope b Hartley - India 42-1
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:20 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley’s first ball of the over is smashed through the off side by Jaiswal, who took a liking to the Lancashire spinner during the first innings.
England are short of quality bowling, especially with the injury to Jack Leach. But he has a breakthrough!
He is caught by Pope at short leg!
India 38-0 (11) Rohit 24, Jaiswal 10, Root 0-20 (6) - need 193 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:15 , Sonia Twigg
Root looks to be settling into a rhythm herea, although India’s flow of runs does not seem to be abating.
Three from the over.
India 35-0 (10) Rohit 22, Jaiswal 10, Hartley 0-7 (4) - need 196 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:11 , Sonia Twigg
Another lbw shout, but that one pitched outside the line.
Three from the over.
India 32-0 (9) Rohit 22, Jaiswal 9, Root 0-17 (5) - need 199 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:08 , Sonia Twigg
The pressure had been building but Rohit has another boundary, this time down the ground in Joe Root’s 5th over, the third time he has bowled a full toss, and that one has been punished.;
India 27-0 (8) Rohit 18, Jaiswal 8, Hartley 0-6 (3) - need 204 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:05 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley is finding a good amount of turn and bounce here, and the flow of runs has just stemmed slightly after a costly start.
India 25-0 (7) Rohit 17, Jaiswal 7, Root 0-12 (4) - need 206 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 07:01 , Sonia Twigg
There’s just a hint of spin as Root’s over goes for just one run.
India 24-0 (6) Rohit 16 Jaiswal 7, Hartley 0-4 (2) - need 207 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:58 , Sonia Twigg
Hartley and England go up for lbw, Stokes thinks about a review and goes for it! There was no bat involved, but was it going down?
It was doing too much, turning and missing the stumps and potentially even bouncing over as well.
England have lost one review.
India 22-0 (5) Rohit 15, Jaiswal 6, Root 0-11 (3) - need 209 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:53 , Sonia Twigg
A leg-side delivery from Root and Jaiswal sweeps it to the boundary for four for his first boundary of the day.
India 17-0 (4) Rohit 15, Jaiswal 1, Hartley 0-2 (1) - need 214 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:50 , Sonia Twigg
After one (admittedly costly) over from Mark Wood, England turn to spin, and Tom Hartley. He was costly in the first innings.
India 15-0 (3) Rohit 14, Jaiswal 0, Root 0-6 (2) - need 216 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:45 , Sonia Twigg
A full toss from Joe Root goes unpunished from Rohit, but the second one is sent to the boundary.
Rohit has made a quick-fire start. There’s a big lbw appeal against Jaiswal, will England review?
In the first innings they used all three reviews inside the 14th over, and will not send this one upstairs.
India 10-0 (2) Rohit 9, Jaiswal 0, Wood 0-8 (1) - need 221 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:41 , Sonia Twigg
Mark Wood will open the bowling from the other end, and that is comfortably played through backward point for four by Rohit.
Wood has caught the edge! But that has not been taken by Crawley at second slip! It was travelling low but that will go down as a missed chance and it brings four more runs.
India 1-0 (1) Rohit 1, Jaiswal 0, Root 0-1 (1) - need 230 runs to win
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:36 , Sonia Twigg
Root will bowl the first over of the fourth innings. He has started bowling well, no massive turn though, but it is a new ball.
Lunch and innnings: England 420 all out, lead by 230 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:32 , Sonia Twigg
Jack Leach has bruising of the left knee and has been receiving treatment and will be on the field at the start of the innings and is fit to bowl, that is very good news for England as the players make their way onto the field.
Lunch and innnings: England 420 all out, lead by 230 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:31 , Sonia Twigg
That looked like a window of opportunity for India but the arrival of Tom Hartley confounded them even further, the tall left-hander looking entirely untroubled as he joined Pope in a stand of 80 in 106 balls.
The hosts were increasingly listless as England took the game on, Hartley producing a no-look scoop early in his innings before charging Ravichandran Ashwin and lacing him for four down the ground.
The arrival of the new ball did not bring the desired effect, Pope quick to flip it over his head for four more and Hartley pinging Ravindra Jadeja over the top.
When Ashwin did beat the bat, an increasing rarity, the ball nipped past Pope’s outside edge and skimmed away for four byes. Moments after unfurling a glorious straight drive Pope was granted a life on 186, fencing Mohammed Siraj to slip only for KL Rahul to spill a low catch.
Hartley, who joined Pope in using the reverse sweep to quell the spin, was finally undone for 34 by a shin-high grubber from Ashwin and that was the turning point India needed. Mark Wood came and went for a duck, caught behind off Jadeja, and when Leach hobbled to the crease Pope decided to force the issue.
With lunch approaching he decided to stoop low paddle Bumrah over the wicketkeeper, a plan that ended with his off stump out of the ground. It was the end of a career-best knock and the seventh highest ever scored by an Englishman in the second innings.
Lunch and innnings: England 420 all out, lead by 230 runs
Sunday 28 January 2024 06:30 , Sonia Twigg
Here is the first session report, via PA:
Ollie Pope was last man out for a stunning 196 as England’s rousing resistance left India chasing 231 to win the first Test on day four in Hyderabad.
Pope fell four short a deserved double century, clean bowled attempting to scoop Jasprit Bumrah over his shoulder with just the injured Jack Leach for company, as the tourists fought their way to 420 all out in a stirring fightback.
They added 104 runs in the morning session as they became just the ninth away team in history to pass 400 in their second innings on Indian soil. When Ben Stokes departed midway through the third day, leaving the score at 163 for five, such an outcome seemed almost impossible.
Pope resumed on 148, a knock hailed by team-mate Joe Root as an “absolute masterclass”, and made it clear he was not finished yet as he reached 150 then sent a sizzling cover drive racing away for four.
His seventh-wicket partnership with Rehan Ahmed reached 64, the teenager contributing 28, before Bumrah had the 19-year-old caught behind.
