When Jorrel Hato was spotted at Anfield on Saturday, the transfer rumour mill naturally burst into life. The Ajax defender has since provided an explanation as to why he was in attendance, though.

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs to have been linked with the 18-year-old, who has emerged as arguably the brightest prospect in the Ajax youth ranks at the moment. Real Madrid have also been named as a potential suitor.

The sighting of him at Anfield got some Liverpool supporters excited about a potential January deal. However, speaking at a pre-match press conference on Wednesday (h/t De Telegraaf via Sport Witness), Hato shared the reasons behind his jaunt to Merseyside and offered a candid assessment of his future.

"I read it all," he said regarding the transfer rumours. "But I also know that not everything was right. For my development it's best that I stay at Ajax now. I was invited by Ryan Gravenberch.

"But I didn't speak to a director there. Liverpool played well and the atmosphere in the stadium was good, but there is no more to say.”

It is no shock that Hato was impressed by the Reds, as they ran out 4-1 winners against Ipswich Town to preserve their six-point lead at the top of the table.

Gravenberch has been one of the standout players this season under new head coach Arne Slot. The Dutchman struggled for game time in his first campaign with the Reds, but has cemented his position as the midfield pivot under his compatriot.
