Iowa to retire Caitlin Clark's No. 22 jersey with ceremony in February

Clark will be in attendance as the Hawkeyes take on JuJu Watkins and USC

At just 22 years old, Caitlin Clark's legacy as an Iowa Hawkeyes legend has been secured. Iowa announced Wednesday it would honor Clark by retiring her No. 22 jersey with a ceremony in February.

According to the school, Clark will be in attendance at the retirement ceremony, which will take place during the Hawkeyes' home matchup against USC on Feb. 2.

"I'm forever proud to be a Hawkeye and Iowa holds a special place in my heart that is bigger than just basketball,” Clark said in the statement. "It means the world to me to receive this honor and to celebrate it with my family, friends and alumni. It will be a great feeling to look up in the rafters and see my jersey alongside those that I've admired for so long."

Clark's No. 22 will become the third jersey to be retired in program history. Megan Gutafson, who played for the Hawkeyes from 2015-19, had her No. 10 jersey retired in 2020; Michelle Edwards' No. 30 was retired in 1990 after her time playing for Iowa in the 1980s.

The Hawkeyes, currently ranked No. 22, will have their work cut out for them with the No. 7 Trojans, who are 10-1 behind talented sophomore guard JuJu Watkins.

During her time with Iowa, Clark was a two-time consensus National Player of the Year, leading the Hawkeyes to two straight NCAA championship games, but falling short of the title both times. In March, Clark broke the all-time scoring record for NCAA D1 basketball, achieving the outstanding feat in front of a raucous, sold-out crowd at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye arena.

Clark was named the 2024 Athlete of the Year by Time Magazine after her stellar college season was followed by earning WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.
