Island rowing clubs kick off 2025 with competitive time trial

The three Isle of Wight rowing clubs joined forced to host the first River Medina time trial of 2025, taking advantage of ideal rowing conditions.

In Division 1, crews battled the ride over a 3,400m course.

The fastest men’s time came from Newport’s coxless four, clocking in at 15 minutes 34 seconds.

However, Ryde’s coxed four recorded the best men’s performance relative to gold medal standard at 64 per cent, just edging out Newport by one per cent.

Among the women’s crews, Newport’s Novice Women led the way, finishing in 18 minutes 30 seconds.

Division 2 saw crews race with the tide over 1,750m.

Ryde’s J16 coxed quad secured the fastest men’s time at six minutes 44 seconds, while Shanklin Masters’ coastal four topped the women’s times at seven minutes 14 seconds.

Ryde’s Charlie Watts delivered the standout performance, sculling the course in six minutes 52 seconds (82 per cent of gold medal standard), with notable efforts from Shanklin’s Simon Nevitt (78 per cent) and J14 sculler Connie Batley-Smith (79 per cent).
