A HEAVILY depleted Isle of Wight RFC side were demolished by league leaders, Winchester in the Counties 2 Hampshire league on Saturday.

WINCHESTER II 104, ISLE OF WIGHT 8

The result and margin of victory were not entirely unexpected, considering Winchester's 74-point haul at Wootton Rec earlier in the season.

Isle of Wight's injury and unavailability list contributed to their struggles, as Winchester put on a sparkling display of attacking rugby that the Islanders could not contain.

Despite being outmatched, the Islanders did not go unrewarded for their hard work.

A George Huish penalty and a richly deserved Sam McQueen try put points on the scoreboard for the Islanders.

An Isle of Wight RFC spokesperson said: "We have played the two top sides in the last fortnight and can hope for brighter days ahead.

"The team travels to Fordingbridge on Saturday in a re-arranged fixture.

"The club's second team had raised a side for their home fixture against Fawley, but unfortunately the mainlanders were unable to field a side."
