Jürgen Klopp rant proved Gary Lineker spot on after Tottenham vs Liverpool controversy
It is too late for Liverpool to truly get revenge for what happened, and even if the Reds wanted that, it wasn't Tottenham's fault. You suspect, though, as Jürgen Klopp's side gears up to face Spurs again, the word (or acronym) VAR might be mentioned a few times.
Liverpool fans won't need reminding that in the reverse fixture, Luis Díaz should have scored. He did score a perfectly legitimate goal, and in fact the VAR, Darren England agreed. And yet, with the wording mixed up and the match restarted, there was nothing the officials could do as they realized what they had done.
Both Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones were sent off that day — two harsh decisions, the Reds would argue — and then to compound things, Joël Matip scored a late own goal to gift Tottenham the points. It was a cruel end when nine-man Liverpool had defended so well.

Jota was given two soft bookings while Jones' over-the-top tackle was deemed to be endangering his opponent. That is a fair enough assessment but there are other tackles this season that have been similar and gone unpunished.
"I don’t want to make it the biggest subject but I cannot forget the [last] Tottenham game as well," Klopp said during his press conference on Friday to preview today's game. "It was just so strange.
"Now we play Tottenham and that was obviously not their fault that night — they just played the game. But I would like to win that game for 500 reasons and that we lost there in the way we lost is one of them."
That was a much more measured take than his assessment at the time. "2 red cards and what appears to be a VAR mess up with the Diaz offside," Gary Lineker posted on social media at the time. "Think Klopp might have a rant," he said. And he was right. "Unbelievable. Think it's safe to say it's not been Liverpool's day. Klopp might well explode."
"I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions," Klopp then said when questioned by the media afterward. The PGMOL issued a statement explaining the error, but that wasn't going to help in terms of the points. They could easily have made a difference in the Premier League title race.
"The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over," Klopp said. "Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky. For Jota, first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with eight outfield players is tricky."
On the Díaz mix-up — still an unprecedented VAR error — he added: "That is not offside when you see it, they drew their lines wrong. The ball is between Mo [Salah's] legs, they drew the line wrong and didn't judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right. It is so tough to deal with it."
Liverpool.com says: Lineker was right about Klopp not being happy, and Klopp was right to feel so aggrieved. Had there been anything on the line this weekend, it could have been used as motivation. As it is, Spurs are the ones that need the points as they chase Aston Villa in the top four race.
