Jack Brown hopes to have given head coach Willie Peters plenty to ponder following his performance in the Amsterdam Challenge. The prop put in a captain's knock after being given the role for the pre-season clash, catching the eye with a powerful display through the middle.

Peters had indicated earlier this month that those who featured in the pre-season trial game would be the ones not in his matchday plans for the Super League opener at that point, suggesting Brown and the other senior players who featured currently have some work to do to get in the side.

That said, the fixture also gave those who did play a chance to put their front foot forward, and Brown was among the standout performances in the defeat to York.

Competition for places is fierce across the Rovers side this year but Brown said: "Hopefully I've given him a headache, that's the least I could have done.

"I feel fit and ready. I'm a little bit fitter and stronger. I've just been ripping in, every day is a challenge. We've got a great squad and every day you've got to be on it or you get found out.

"That's been a massive help to me this year, knowing you've got to come and rip in whether you're tired, sore or feeling sorry for yourself. You've got no excuses."

Being handed the captaincy is quite the journey for Brown, given this time last year he was playing for Hull FC.

"Wardy text me, I thought I must have some individual video but then he told me I had the honour of captaining the boys. If you'd told me that this time last year, I'd have never believed you!

"I thought when he text me I was going to be getting a b******ing after training! It's a big honour and obviously my family travelled over. They were coming regardless but it made it extra special for them."

And on Amsterdam, Brown hopes the concept continues moving forward.

"It's something completely different," he said. "It's good for the game, hopefully it's grown the game in Amsterdam. We obviously didn't get the result but for rugby league, it was a good occasion. I think my family enjoyed the beers! They've loved it, they've made a weekend of it like a lot of Rovers fans."
