Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s father threatened to ‘beat him to death’
The father of Jakob Ingebrigtsen will stand trial next year over allegations that he physically abused the double Olympic champion and another of his children.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen, who coached Jakob and his brothers Henrik and Filip to multiple major athletics titles, denies the allegations, which emerged last year when the three siblings went public with the story of what they called their father’s “very aggressive and controlling” behaviour.
Gjert, who is 58, was also charged earlier this year with the alleged abuse of another of his seven children, who is not one of the running brothers.
According to the Norwegian publication VG, the newspaper in which the brothers first made the allegations that prompted the police investigation, Gjert will stand trial next year and the state prosecutor has requested a 30-day trial.
The report says that Jakob, who won the 1500 metres at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and then the 5,000m in Paris this year, has provided testimony to the authorities which alleges he was the victim of mental and physical abuse, including “punching and kicking”. In one instance, it is reported that Gjert threatened to “beat him to death”.
The entire family are major celebrities in Norway after becoming stars of reality TV show Team Ingebrigtsen, which followed their family life, training and success on the international stage.
Jakob stopped being coached by Gjert after the Tokyo Olympics and has since largely worked under the guidance of his two brothers. Gjert, however, has continued coaching and has guided Jakob’s Norwegian team-mate Narve Gilje Nordas to a world 1500m bronze and the Olympic 1500m final this year, in which Jakob finished fourth.
Gjert has previously insisted that he had “never used violence against his children”. His lawyers say that he denies the charges.
Mette Yvonne Larsen, the state assistant attorney, said: “This [development] was as expected based on the evidence situation. It is a very serious indictment that extends over a period of many years.”
