Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has confirmed that the Wolves game came too soon for Jakub Stolarczyk to start after returning from injury this week.

The Foxes were thrashed by their relegation rivals as Wolves raced into a 3-0 lead in the first-half. Supporters let their feelings known with boos around the stadium and sarcastic cheers when Danny Ward touched the ball.

Van Nistelrooy's decision to start Ward over Daniel Iversen or Stolarczyk was greeted with concerns pre-match and frustration boiled over with Ward at fault for at least two of Wolves' goals.

Stolarczyk returned to action for the first time since the end of the Championship winning season on Monday night for the Foxes Under-21s against Everton. However, he was left out of the squad for the Wolves game with Daniel Iversen the substitute goalkeeper.

After the game, the Leicester boss defended Ward after being on the receiving end of boos from home fans and explained why Stolarczyk was not selected. While it seems he will be in contention for Liverpool on Boxing Day, the same cannot be definitively said about number one Mads Hermansen, who is still out with a groin problem.

"Jakub played for the Under-21s so his rehab is finished and he's completely fit," the Dutchman said. "He's available for selection. Mads is still injured. This game came too early for him and we're working hard to get him back as soon as possible.

"No [Stolarczyk couldn't have been selected today], we felt like today was very short notice. He only played minutes one time for the Under-21s, that was his last step, that went well. From now on, we can build on with him to work towards the first team."
