Tottenham Hotspur playmaker James Maddison has been involved in an online spat with a supporter following their 2-2 draw with Wolves on Sunday.

The 28-year-old was spotted at the PDC World Darts Championship with teammate Brennan Johnson, hours after Jorgen Strand Larsen earned a point in the capital for Vitor Pereira - the new man at the Molineux helm. Ange Postecoglou's side were booed as they moved to three matches without a win and in the bottom half of the table.

Maddison was a second-half substitute, replacing Johnson who restored Spurs' lead in first-half stoppage time after Rodrigo Bentancur cancelled out Hee-Chan Hwang's opener inside 10 minutes. Son Heung-min missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time but the Welshman was on hand to fire the Australian manager's side in front.

Maddison was involved in an online back-and-forth with a fan page in the aftermath of the draw in north London. The midfielder was spotted at the World Darts Championship evening session as Rob Owen, Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright booked their place in the quarter finals.

The official Instagram account for the Professional Darts Corporation posted snaps of the Spurs duo on their social media. However, one supporter took umbrage with their appearance at Alexandra Palace.

An account wrote "U taking the p***? The form were (sic) in and U go to the darts?? Unacceptable." The comment prompted a response from Maddison who hit back: "shut up u wally".

The user posted a response on his account where he expressed his love for Maddison but felt his comment was warranted. He wrote: "Just been called a wally. Honestly, I didn't expect this to be a massive deal.

"Never would I want to add any more pressure on my club or the players. But the pair did it to themselves. Thought it was a harmless comment expressing my frustration about the result vs. Wolves earlier.

"To an extent, I believe I'm right, but also, the man can do what the hell he wants... If any player that played earlier was at the darts, I would have said and felt the same thing!

"I love Maddison, but it's unnecessary and unacceptable to do that with the mess all around the club atm. Legendary and funny reply tbf to him, though."

The draw leaves Spurs 11 points off the Champions League places and seven away from Europa League qualification as Manchester City moved into fifth after returning to winning ways against Leicester City. But pressure continues to mount on the Spurs boss following a 6-3 defeat at home to Liverpool before their Boxing Day disappointment at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest.
