Jamie Carragher admits Liverpool player has proved him wrong in biggest surprise of the season
Jamie Carragher hailed Ryan Gravenberch as the ‘biggest surprise of the season’ on Monday night as both he and fellow pundit Gary Neville selected the Liverpool midfielder in their Premier League Teams of the Season at the halfway stage.
Gravenberch has enjoyed a transformational campaign under fellow Dutchman Arne Slot, who has deployed the 22-year-old in a holding midfield role. Gravenberch previously played as a more attacking player, but his partnership with Alexis Mac Allister has provided excellent cover for the Liverpool back four this season.
The former Ajax and Bayern Munich star has started all 18 Premier League matches this season for Liverpool and has played every minute in the Champions League. It’s no wonder, therefore, that he was among seven players Carragher and Neville agreed had to be in their best XIs from the first half of the 2024/25 campaign.

“I think he has been the biggest surprise but in a really good way this season,” opined Carragher during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “When he came in last season, I saw him as a no.8, almost like a floating attacking midfielder, who was a little bit of nothing, if I’m being totally honest.
“To think he has now become one of the most disciplined midfield players in the Premier League right now and is playing such a vital role in protecting the back four, I think he has been an absolute revelation.”
Carragher’s comments echo the view of former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Redknapp just a day previously.
“Gravenberch has been a revelation, he's been absolutely magnificent,” the 51-year-old said ahead of Liverpool’s 5-0 win at West Ham United. “But because of his profile, he’s incredibly tall, he’s athletic, can drive with the ball, he’s comfortable in all types of situations.
“We label players ‘you’re a 6, you’re an 8, you’re a 10’. He is more than that. He can play as a 6 but because he’s so comfortable on the ball, he can play like a no.8 or a no.10.”
Gravenberch was one of seven players Carragher and Neville agreed on in their respective Teams of the Season, along with Virgil van Dijk, Moises Caicedo, Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer, Matheus Cunha and Chris Wood.
