Jamie Carragher can't believe Gary Neville's team of the season as 4 Liverpool players included
Jamie Carragher was left in disbelief after seeing Gary Neville’s Premier League team of the season so far, despite four Liverpool players being included.
The Reds lead the way in the title race at the halfway point in the season, having gone eight points clear before the turn of the year following the 5-0 win over West Ham on Sunday. Arsenal can narrow the gap to six points on New Year’s Day, but Arne Slot’s side will remain in pole position.
With the 2024/25 campaign now at the halfway point, Sky Sports pundits Carragher and Neville took the chance to revisit their pre-season predictions on Monday Night Football, as well as name their teams of the season so far.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool players dominated both line-ups, with the former Liverpool and Manchester United defenders agreeing on Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah. Both of them also picked Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha and Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood.
Neville also included Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back in his team, but even with four Liverpool players in his side, he couldn’t escape Carragher’s ridicule. The former Reds star was left in disbelief after seeing his fellow pundit name Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol at left-back.
“How have you picked Gvardiol at left-back?” Carragher asked Neville. “He gives a goal away every game! Have you actually watched Man City?”
Nevilled responded: “Yeah I’ve watched them a few times this season.”
Carragher replied: “Well obviously not enough! What games have you watched? Are you serious?”
Neville also picked Arsenal defender William Saliba in his side, while giving Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels the nod.
Carragher, meanwhile, picked Forest pair Ola Aina and Nikola Milenkovic alongside Fulham’s Antonee Robinson at left-back, while Arsenal’s David Raya was named in goal.
Liverpool.com says: You might have picked four Liverpool players, Gary, but you’re not getting away with that. How on earth can you pick Gvardiol given the way he’s played over the last couple of months?
It’s not even like there’s a shortage of names to pick at left-back - if not Robinson, then Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has been superb. Even Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella should be considered before Gvardiol.
At least he’s got most of his team right, although we’d argue Ibrahima Konate should have featured in both sides. The Frenchman has been immense this season, and if anything, his recent injury has shown just how good he has been, with Liverpool not quite looking as solid at the back in his absence.
