Jamie Carragher delivers blunt Darwin Nunez verdict despite Arne Slot's new Liverpool challenge
Jamie Carragher can’t see a future for Darwin Nunez at Liverpool beyond this season - although he feels he could still play a big part in the Reds winning the Premier League.
Nunez was Liverpool’s hero at the weekend, with his two stoppage time goals securing what could be a crucial victory over Brentford in the context of the title race. The Reds now sit six points above Arsenal with a game in hand after the Gunners could only draw with Aston Villa.
That late double has revived what had been a disappointing season for Nunez. Before the weekend, the Uruguay international had just four goals from 26 appearances, leading to him dropping further down the pecking order at Anfield.

Not only that, but speculation has been growing recently over a potential move to Saudi Arabia, although it seems unlikely that Liverpool would offload him this month. Nevertheless, Carragher doesn’t think he will still be with the Reds next season.
“No. Not really, maybe right now. But I wouldn’t imagine he will be at the club next season,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “I don’t know, I’m not privy to those conversations.”
The former Liverpool defender though does feel Nunez still has a big part to play this season if the Reds are to land the Premier League title.
“But he has got a brilliant record coming from the bench,” Carragher added. “I think since he joined the club, he has got more goals and assists than anyone in the Premier League from the bench, so maybe that is his role from now until the end of the season – which can help Liverpool get over the line.”
Carragher’s comments come after Arne Slot issued a personal challenge to Nunez to take the next step as a player following his brace at the weekend, with the Liverpool boss wanting to see him become more consistent with his performances.
"The most difficult thing in football for a team and as an individual is to find consistency,” Slot said in his press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Lille. “Only a few players in the world are able to be at the same level every three days in a row, then there is a big, big, big group of players that are able to play very good many times, but not every time.
"He [Nunez] is one of the group of players that plays good many times, and it would be nice for him to go into the bracket of the seven or eight players who play well every three days. That is the next step for him. I know we have one or two players who are in that group, and it is a nice challenge for him to get in that group as well."
