Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has offered a measured take on the Premier League title race, but believes the Reds have the chance to do something exciting.

Arne Slot's side remain at the top of the table and at the time of writing sit just one point ahead of Chelsea whose game against Everton ended goalless, with Liverpool taking on Tottenham later on Sunday. The Reds go into the trip to the capital with two games in hand.

The league is a lot tighter compared to recent seasons. There is just five points between the leaders and fourth while six points is the difference between Brighton in 10th and Nottingham Forest which currently occupies the final Champions League spot.

Speaking on Sky Sports Super Sunday, Carragher believes the amount of points needed to win the league will be lower than in previous seasons.

When asked if Liverpool got through their four festive fixtures would it make it difficult for anyone else [to win the league], Carragher replies: "There is still so long to go isn't there, I mean what does that get us to the halfway stage?

"I think if you're top then, you've played everyone and I think then we've got a real good idea. But I think with Manchester City being out of it, this is almost like a throwback.

"We can't expect teams to win every single week and get sort of mid-90s to late-90 points, it could be more mid-80s points to win the title, which is probably what you want in someways.

"There's a little more sort of people drop points here and there, putting pressure on people and thinking that someone could slip up and have more of a chance of getting in there. But I think Arsenal and Liverpool will be looking at this as a massive massive opportunity."

Liverpool.com says: I don't think many football fans expected Liverpool to be in this position, especially in what was considered as a transitional season. Its hard not to wonder could happen in May b ut like Carragher says there is still a long way to go.
