Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagree on Liverpool ace amid Team of the Season selections

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have disagreed with each other on their selections for the 2023/24 Premier League Team of the Season. The former defenders both picked different formations, with Carragher selecting Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk within defense.

The Reds hero opted for a 3-4-2-1 formation, which Neville claimed he had selected in previous years and was 'blitzed' by football fans for the decision. Despite the arguing, the pair agreed on several players who should be included in the squad. These consisted of Arsenal stars William Saliba, Gabriel, Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, as well as Cole Palmer, Rodri and Phil Foden.

However, the disagreements arrived when Carragher included Liverpool captain Van Dijk and Kevin De Bruyne, who has only started 13 games in the Premier League campaign. "What's going on here, what's this?" Neville said at the sight of Carragher's selections.

"At one point five or six years ago, I picked a three at the back and got absolutely blitzed off him for it. No one loves De Bruyne more than me but he's played less than a third of Man City's minutes."

To which Carragher argued: "Have you seen how many chances he's created? Basically shows how good a player he is. Kevin De Bruyne is the best player in the Premier League and he has been for five years. The number of chances he's created is off the scale."

He also went on to defend the selection of Van Dijk, where he added: "I think without Van Dijk, Liverpool would be up against Villa and Tottenham. I think he's been that important. He's been playing alongside a young kid for half the season. He's had three different partners. He's been back to his absolute best."

Neville continued to question the selections his colleague had made. "He doesn't even believe what he's saying here," he joked. "He doesn't even believe it himself this year. He's created a system that doesn't exist. Oh my God. You're walking in mud."

Neville opted for the selections of Emiliano Martínez, Ben White, Destiny Udogie and Erling Haaland in his team, which played in a traditional 4-3-3 formation.

Carragher's TOTS: Pickford, Saliba, Van Dijk, Gabriel, Rodri, Rice, Odegaard, De Bruyne, Palmer, Watkins and Foden.

Neville's TOTS: Martinez, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Udogie, Rodri, Rice, Odegaard, Palmer, Haaland and Foden.

Liverpool.com says: Van Dijk might not be a popular choice with Neville but he is deserving of a spot in the team. He has been nominated for Premier League Player of the Season and has looked back to his best throughout the campaign. He has also been a regular at the age of 32, despite those around him regularly being sidelined.
