Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool should look to sign a new left-back during the January transfer window in order to provide help to Andy Robertson.

Robertson has started Liverpool's last seven games in all competitions owing to an injury to fellow left-back Kostas Tsimikas, but that streak of starts will end this week after the Scot was sent off against Fulham over the weekend.

The 30-year-old sustained a heavy knock to his knee in the opening period of the match, and was then beaten at the back post by Andreas Pereira for Fulham's opening goal before his dismissal for bringing Harry Wilson down as Liverpool's last man in the 17th minute.

Arne Slot had been rotating Robertson and Tsimikas during the opening weeks of the season, but the ankle injury sustained by Tsimikas in November has meant it has not been possible to afford a rest to Robertson of late.

Despite Tsimikas being due to return soon after returning to the training pitch last week, Carragher thinks Liverpool should look to strengthen in the left-back position when the transfer window opens in the new year.

"Right now he needs help," Carragher said of Robertson on Sky Sports. "The reason is when he gets that whack he should probably come off, but Liverpool haven’t got any real back-up for him at the moment. He’s going through a tough time but I think it’s something Liverpool need to address in January."

Robertson is set to serve his one-match suspension on Wednesday night when the Reds travel to Southampton in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Should Tsimikas not be ready to return on the South Coast, Slot may be forced to shuffle his back line, with one option being to move Joe Gomez out to left-back and bring Jarell Quansah in to the center of defense.

In terms of where the Reds stand on signing a new left-back, it is reported that Arne Slot is keen to strengthen in that area of the pitch. However, it appears unlikely that the club will sign a new defender in January, with a summer move more likely; Milos Kerkez and Alphonso Davies are among the left-backs that Liverpool has been linked with.
