Jamie Carragher has said Liverpool should look to sign a new left-back in January as Andy Robertson ‘needs help’.

The Scotland captain has endured some tough times this season and after a disappointing performance at Arsenal in October said he had been ‘written off’. But in the weeks since he also gave away a penalty against Real Madrid, made several mistakes in the 3-2 win at Southampton and was sent off after just 18 minutes on Saturday as Liverpool drew 2-2 with Fulham.

Robertson has also been rotated this season, for the first time in his Liverpool career, and there’s a growing sense that the club might need to find a long-term replacement for the former Hull City man. But speaking in the latest episode of The Overlap, Carragher claimed Liverpool should bring someone in next month to help address the issue.

“He [Robertson] needs help, doesn’t he? [Kostas] Tsimikas is injured and he’s not at that level, we know that,” the former defender said. “But Robertson is playing too much football. He can still do 15-20 games a season, but he needs help in January.”

Despite Carragher’s verdict, he seemed to agree with Paul Scholes’ opinion that Robertson’s dip in form hasn’t been quite as drastic as some have made out.

“He’s having that thing as a player, and I’ve been there… full-back is the area where you can get really exposed and feel really alone,” the 46-year-old opined. “At center-back, you’re ok, you can get a midfielder.

“Sometimes you can be left alone out there [as a full-back] and it’s not even that he has been that bad, but the more you talk about it, the opposition think about it and it gets in your head. You’re actually getting asked more questions because that narrative has started, especially around defenders when they get to a certain age.

“I had it and people tell you that you’ve had a bad game because of your age but I had loads of bad games when I was 23. When that narrative starts it gets in your head and the players you’re playing with.”

Following his dismissal on Saturday, Robertson is suspended for the midweek Carabao Cup trip to Southampton, but could come back into the team to face Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend. However, it’s unclear whether the full-back is fit following a collision with Issa Diop minutes before his red card.

Arne Slot also confirmed in Tuesday’s press conference that Tsimikas is back in training and might be available to play at St Mary’s, so could also be selected to face Spurs.
