Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher reckons Manchester United were practicing the defence of set-pieces incorrectly during their warm-up prior to the clash with Newcastle.

United have conceded five goals from corners since Ruben Amorim arrived at Old Trafford and it was clear that the Portuguese's coaching staff are keen to address those issues quickly. During the warm-ups, the Sky Sports' cameras noted how the Reds were going through set-piece routines before kick-off.

However, Carragher believes that Amorim's coaching staff are taking the wrong approach to defending a particular type of corner. "It is actually [Eriksen] Eriksen putting in the cross with an outswinger," he explained.

"I know they are warming up, but the positions of [Joshua] Zirkzee and [Diogo] Dalot here, they can't actually head the ball in that position because it is an outswinger it's always going to come there.

"I think they should all be moving higher up actually.

"I played that position for [ex-Liverpool managed] Rafa Benitez, I was always that front space, level with the six-yard box. As soon as someone was taking it with a right foot, we all moved out two yards.

"So if you think about the six-yard box, I would then come two yards further out to try and head it." It has been a difficult start for United yet again at Old Trafford as they fell behind within five minutes thanks to Alexander Isak's free header.

The advantage was then doubled as another cross from the left-hand side was met by the head of Joelinton. Pre-match headlines yet again surrounded Marcus Rashford - amid ongoing question marks over his future - as he was recalled to the matchday squad.
