Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has reiterated his desire to see Newcastle United win the Carabao Cup despite his old club still remaining in the competition.

The Magpies advanced to the last four of the League Cup earlier this month after they breezed past Brentford with a 3-1 at St James' Park. That victory set up a two-legged semi-final against Arsenal with the first leg coming next week.

Newcastle are fully focused on the Premier League at present but looking ahead to the new year, Carragher has insisted that Eddie Howe should be going all out to win a trophy this season. "When you are Newcastle, I do think winning a trophy is as important as making the Champions League or probably more important," he told Monday Night Football.

"That manager, those players will be remembered as legends. Now, they are going to have to beat Arsenal, one of the best teams in the Premier League and maybe Liverpool [who face Tottenham Hotspur] if they got to the final, that is probably what you would expect it to be.

"That would be really tough for them but, I said this a couple of weeks ago if Liverpool weren't to win that trophy, I would love Newcastle or Tottenham to win it. I'd love someone who hasn't won a trophy for a long time, probably Newcastle more than anybody, because I feel that's something we say every time a new manager comes in but they have a really tough run of fixtures.

"But they look like they are coming back to what we have seen over the last couple of years." Prior to the game at Manchester United, Newcastle sit seventh in the Premier League, just outside the top four.
