Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot is getting more out of Liverpool’s current front three than Jurgen Klopp did after making a simple change from the German.

Slot has enjoyed a sensational first six months since taking over from Klopp in the summer. As we head into 2025, Liverpool will lead the title race with a healthy advantage over its nearest rivals, having lost just one game so far.

Sunday’s 5-0 win over West Ham opened up an eight-point gap at the top of the table, with Chelsea and Arsenal still to play this week - although the Reds do still have a game in hand following the postponement of the Merseyside derby.

Central to their incredible form have been the regular front three of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz, who were all on the scoresheet against the Hammers. Liverpool is the Premier League’s highest scorer this season with 45 goals, with Salah, Gakpo and Diaz making up 30 of those goals.

Slot has made a couple of tweaks in order to accommodate all three players since arriving, with Gakpo moving over to the left - having played there regularly during his time in the Netherlands - while Diaz has operated as the No.9 in recent games.

Gakpo was utilized mostly as a central player under Klopp, but Carragher believes Slot’s tweaks have made a world of difference.

“When you talk about the manager, Slot, Liverpool didn't buy players in the summer but he's rejuvenated so many players,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “Gakpo looks a different player, Diaz looks a different player, [Ryan] Gravenberch in the midfield - even Mo Salah, from last year.

“When you think of the adjustments Slot has made, he's not been a million miles away from Jürgen Klopp and how he plays football. But what he's done with certain players... if this was the situation where Liverpool were without a center-forward [last season] Gakpo would have been down the middle, Diaz would have been on the left.

“Gakpo looks a completely different player on the left than he did under Klopp, and Diaz looks better when he's playing through the center than the left. That's not being critical of Jürgen Klopp but again it's that little tweak that Arne Slot has put on this Liverpool team has made a massive difference.”
