Jamie Carragher has given a scathing verdict of Tottenham Hotspur following its Carabao Cup defeat against Liverpool on Thursday night.

Spurs were beaten 4-0 by Arne Slot’s side in a game Liverpool dominated start to finish as it secured its place in the Carabao Cup final courtesy of goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

While Liverpool managed 10 shots on target at Anfield, Spurs - who led 1-0 coming into the second leg - didn’t muster a single one. As the pressure mounts on Ange Postecoglou, with Tottenham sitting 14th in the Premier League, Carragher claimed the problem is bigger than the manager and comes from a systemic issue at the club

“It was never in doubt before the game,” the 47-year-old said on Sky Sports when asked about his former side progressing to the final. “It’s Tottenham. When do Tottenham ever win a big game? When do Tottenham ever go somewhere and surprise you or win against the odds?

“The odds were heavily in favor of Liverpool; they’re at home, they’re the best team in the country and possibly the best team in Europe right now. It’s not just this Spurs team… they never shock you or do something out of the ordinary.

“I’m trying to think of the last big game they won - you probably have to go back to that Ajax game in the [2019 Champions League] semi-final. I was in the stadium that night and I don't want to take it away from Tottenham, but they were very lucky. They were battered for most of the game, it was a freak and they got two goals in the last minute.

“Whenever they go into a big game as a football club, nobody ever believes they're going to win. That's not me as a Liverpool fan, those Tottenham fans there tonight, not one of them believed they were going to win and to go Wembley. They just won't.

“When I look at those three midfield players today, I thought they were a disgrace,” Carragher continued. “No matter who your manager is, you’re in a semi-final and we talk about them getting on the ball - but we came into this and if you’re a Tottenham man you know ‘first 15 minutes Liverpool are going to get on the ball and put you under pressure’.

“But get after them and be aggressive. Maybe forget the ball for the first half an hour and even if you’re camped in your own half. It was just so easy for Liverpool.”
