Arsenal are expected to spend big yet again in the summer as Mikel Arteta bids to improve his squad once more.

Stan Kroenke has allowed the Gunners to bring in the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Riccardo Calafiori in recent years, with Arsenal now Premier League title challengers and Champions League regulars. No players were brought in January, however, and some feel that has left the north Londoners light, especially in attack.

"We had a clear intention which is obvious. There is a window open to explore the possibilities to improve our squad with players that can impact it. We haven't achieved it," Arteta conceded after the January window slammed shut last week.

"So we are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kind of players. We have to be very disciplined with that as well and I think we were. I wouldn't like to go into too much detail. We couldn't do it for certain reasons and we have to accept it, that's it. It was a combination of things."

football.london understands Arsenal are open to signing a forward in the summer, with the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres some of the names tipped with a move to Emirates Stadium. Ollie Watkins is also a player the north Londoners like but it remains to be seen if they go back in for the Aston Villa striker after their failed pursuit in the winter.

Interestingly, Diogo Jota was linked with the Gunners over the weekend. Anfield Watch reports the Reds are considering allowing Jota to depart Merseyside in the summer with Arsenal keen on signing the frontman. The 28-year-old's contract runs until June 2027 and he may be allowed to leave for the 'right fee', with the Portugal international valued at €50million (£41.6million) on Transfermarkt.

Although Jota's injury record is not the best, he has scored eight goals in 21 appearances for the Reds this season and would add quality to the Gunners attack. Jamie Carragher is a huge fan of the former Wolves man and believes he is a better finisher than the likes of Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres.

"I think of some of the strikers I've played alongside: Michael Owen, Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler. I think he [Jota] is the best finisher," Carragher said last January, as per Sky Sports.

"Robbie (Fowler) maybe [could be ahead of him] in terms of pure finishing, hard and low, into the corner. But [his two goals against Bournemouth are] typical Jota. When he gets the chance he is so clinical. This season, he's got a goal or an assist every 84 minutes. There's only two or three players in the Premier League who are higher than that.

"He sums up Liverpool's recruitment over the last five or six years. He's a player who was in and out of the Wolves team, and when he was bought a lot of people were scratching their heads.

"When everyone's fit, he's probably not even playing. But I still think he's a better finisher than the likes of Suarez, Torres, even Salah. The only one who can compete with him is Robbie Fowler at the start of the Premier League years."

Jota will have two years remaining on his contract at Liverpool come the summer and the Reds may have a decision to make when it comes to his future. With Arsenal in need of a striker, the Gunners may see it as an opportunity too good to turn down.
