Jamie McGrath monitored by Hearts and Hibs as Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin opens up on contract talks
Hearts and Hibs are both keeping a close eye on Jamie McGrath’s situation - although Aberdeen are still pushing to get him on a new contract.
The Dons have been in talks for several months but their capital rivals have also both expressed an interest in the 28-year-old. The Republic of Ireland international, who is out for a couple of months after shoulder surgery, is out-of-contract in the summer. McGrath also has potential interest in Europe and Major League Soccer and is currently weighing up his options.
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin has confirmed talks with McGrath’s representative and director of football Steven Gunn are still on-going. “I know that his agent and Steven are speaking,” Thelin confirmed. “Let’s see what’s happening. I know the process is there and that’s what I know.”

The former St Mirren player, who had a loan spell at Dundee United, moved to Aberdeen two seasons ago. He has been a key player for Aberdeen in terms of goals and assists during that time.
Thelin confirmed that Aberdeen are still in talks with left-back Jack MacKenzie over a new deal as well. The left-back is also out-of-contract in the summer along with the likes of Duk and Ross Doohan. Thelin, when asked about MacKenzie, added: “Yeah, it’s the same situation.”
Aberdeen are still looking to add a striker and a central defender in this transfer window. Those are the immediate priorities. Aberdeen could also look to bring in another midfielder if they can get other players out. James McGarry is expected to join Greek side Kallithea on loan and experienced defender Angus MacDonald is also attracting interest from England and overseas.
Thelin, when asked if he would be looking to bring in a replacement for the injured McGrath, explained: “It’s a mix. You have to think about the long-term and trust the players here and try to find solutions with the squad you have and don’t panic. But let’s see what we’re going to do, if we’re going to have some more or not in the window this time.”
Aberdeen and Rangers are both keen to land Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron but any moves on that front, from either side, would be with a view to the summer. Cameron is out-of-contract in the summer and if he moves elsewhere in Scotland then a fee would be decided by a tribunal, unless a club can agree terms with the player and a fee with the Dens Park club.
