January window is grim again as not even two expected signings happen
Watford’s winter transfer deadline day ended at 11pm with just one new player arriving on loan, and two heading out on temporary moves.
American international left-sided defender Caleb Wiley joined on loan from Chelsea for the rest of this season, while Ryan Porteous has moved north to Preston North End.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Myles Roberts, who has been on the bench for the last few games, has gone on loan to Bristol Rovers for the rest of the season.
The one signing of the day, Wiley, has not played since suffering a dislocated shoulder in late November, and it seems unlikely he will be fit for a few weeks.
It means that Tom Cleverley did not receive the two signings today that he had said would arrive.
The Watford Observer understands that the second player Watford didn’t sign is young Fulham winger Martial Godo.
The 21-year-old England Under-20 international is left-footed, and played against the Hornets in the recent FA Cup tie at Craven Cottage.
However, for reasons that are not yet clear, Godo has stayed in west London.
The Hornets also saw 19-year-old defender Travis Akomeah return to the club’s Academy after he had spent three years with Chelsea.
The former Atlanta United player suffered a dislocated shoulder while in France, and it appears unlikely he will be fit to pay this month.
Akomeah, 19, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal, with the club holding an option for an extra year, and will become part of Charlie Daniels’ Under-21 squad.
He burst onto the scene for the Hornets in 2021, playing Under-18s football despite only being 15, catching the eye of several Premier League clubs, with the youngster opting to sign for Chelsea in January 2022.
The arrival of Wiley follows the capture of two other new players during January.
Udinese sent their young Irish Under-21 international defender James Abankwah to Vicarage Road on loan for the rest of the season.
He made his debut in the 2-0 win at Derby County and caught the eye in Saturday’s home defeat to Coventry.
More recently, goalkeeper Egil Selvik signed permanently from Udinese, having moved to Ital from Norway earlier in the month.
The keeper, who has four full international caps, was on the bench at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
During the January window, striker Daniel Jebbison has returned to Bournemouth, Ken Sema has signed for Pafos, Antonio Tikvic has been loaned to Grazer AK and Festy Ebosele was recalled by Udinese before being sold to Basaksehir.
