Jarell Quansah could have a shot at redemption when Liverpool plays Manchester United this weekend.

The 21-year-old will most probably start at Anfield following the injury Joe Gomez sustained at West Ham United on Sunday, with Arne Slot admitting after the match that it will ‘take a while before he is back’.

With Ibrahima Konate also expected to miss out through injury, it means Slot’s only center-back options are Quansah and Virgil van Dijk.

“It’s such a massive game but I just see it as another game we need to win and anything I can do to help the team, if I’m asked to do so, then I’m ready,” Quansah told Liverpool’s club website when asked about the possibility of facing United next week

“Obviously I’ve not played too many minutes but just being ready and knowing that I am ready will always put me in good stead,” he added.

Quansah has started just two Premier League matches all season and the injuries to Gomez and Konate offer the 21-year-old a second chance to impress Slot, who substituted the academy graduate at half-time in the opening-day win at Ipswich Town.

His only league start since came at right-back in the midst of a defensive injury crisis away at Newcastle United, and Slot clearly is not yet convinced about Quansah’s credentials.

A good performance against United at the weekend would, therefore, be something of a personal milestone for Liverpool’s no.78. It could also offer a personal sense of vindication after Quansah’s last appearance against the Red Devils.

A wayward pass to Van Dijk at the start of the second half in April’s visit to Old Trafford inadvertently set up Bruno Fernandes’ incredible chipped goal, when he lobbed Caoimhin Kelleher from inside the center circle.

“Look, as a professional football player he will play in the Premier League and for Liverpool, and I have the bad news [that] it will not be his last mistake, unfortunately,” was Jurgen Klopp’s post-match verdict on the incident.

“But that’s how life is. I thought he dealt extremely well with it and we dealt well with it. So, absolutely no blame or whatever, not at all, no criticism. That just happens, he will learn from it and that’s the best thing that can happen.”

On Sunday, Quansah could be handed the opportunity to prove he has indeed learned from that mistake and has an important role to play for Slot’s Liverpool.
