Wanderers midfielder Jay Matete has been handed a three-match ban by the FA for “violent conduct” against Charlton Athletic.

The incident took place during the final stages of the 2-1 defeat against the Addicks in midweek as Thierry Small looked to keep the ball in the corner.

Sunderland loanee Matete will now miss this weekend’s trip to Huddersfield as well as the upcoming games against Northampton and Reading.

A statement via the official spokesperson account read: “Jay Matete has been suspended for three matches following an incident in the EFL League One match between Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, January 21.

“The midfielder’s behaviour around the 91st minute wasn’t seen by the match officials at the time but it was caught on camera, and the FA alleged that it constitutes violent conduct.

“Jay Matete subsequently admitted to this charge against him and accepted the automatic three-match penalty.”

Charlton boss Nathan Jones was frustrated that the incident hadn't been spotted on the pitch and confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Thursday that the club had "asked for observations".

“We saw it live,” he told South London Press. “We knew it happened. We had video footage and saw it instantly. Then, with video footage – it’s a stamp.

“The ironic thing is that I have no idea how the referee didn’t see it when Matty Godden, who is in the exact same line eye line as him, but four yards further back. Unless Matty’s eyesight is considerably better than that, I could not understand."
