Jermaine Jenas has been axed as the presenter of Formula E on UK television following his sacking by the BBC over complaints he sent explicit texts to colleagues.

Jenas lost his £190,000-a-year job hosting The One Show and the chance to succeed Gary Lineker on Match of the Day in August and appeared to be ditched from his presenting and punditry roles at TNT Sports and Talksport.

He had also fronted coverage of Formula E, which features electric cars, on TNT but any hope he had of returning for the new season has been dashed after a deal was struck for ITV to broadcast the championship.

Nicki Shields, who previously presented on TNT with Jenas, has been confirmed as the new lead anchor following the switch of channels.

Jeff Dodds, Formula E CEO, said: “Nicki Shields has been a cornerstone of our broadcast team and a passionate advocate for what Formula E represents. Her promotion is testament to her own exceptional talent and dedication, as well as her ability to connect with fans.

“It also underscores Formula E’s commitment to breaking down barriers and creating meaningful opportunities for women in motorsport – evidenced by hosting the first-ever all-women’s test session for an FIA Championship in Madrid earlier this month. We’re thrilled to have Nicki lead our storytelling as we embark on another exciting season.”

Shields added: “I vividly remember my first Formula E race in Beijing 2014, and 10 years later, my passion for the sport remains just as strong. I’m thrilled to return to Formula E as lead presenter for season 11. It’s an honour to share the excitement and drama of this incredible sport with fans around the world. With our talented presenting team, we’re committed to bringing viewers closer to the action than ever before. Bring on Sao Paulo!”

Telegraph Sport has attempted to reach Jenas for comment.

He previously admitted sending what he described as messages between “consenting adults”, which left him fighting to save his 13-year marriage.

Jenas returned to Premier League punditry last month when appeared on coverage of Arsenal’s draw with Liverpool for Astro, a Malaysia-based broadcaster which holds TV rights for the competition.

The former Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and England midfielder was seen being filmed while holding a microphone on the touchline before taking a seat in the press box.

Jenas said he was “deeply sorry and ashamed” for sending the messages to staff on The One Show. However, friends of the former footballer said he had been made a scapegoat by the BBC following criticism it received for its handling of the Huw Edwards scandal.

Referring to the messages he sent female colleagues, Jenas said in August: “I think it would be fair to say I have a problem. I know I self-sabotage and have a self-destructive streak when it comes to my relationship especially, and I know I need help. And I am getting help.”

Tim Davie, the BBC director-general, was said to be “deeply unhappy” with the former footballer, with senior executives “absolutely sure” that they were right to sack him and that the decision is legally robust.

The father-of-four had been widely regarded as a natural successor to Lineker as host of Match of the Day. On his departure, a BBC spokesperson said at the time: “We can confirm that he is no longer part of our presenting line-up.”
