Jets Wanted Aaron Rodgers to End His Anti-Vax Media Appearances
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was told by team leadership last week that one condition he had to meet in order to remain under center was avoiding in-season, outside media appearances, including his regular spot on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show.
According to The Athletic senior NFL insider Dianna Russini, head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey had been “undecided” about sticking with the 41-year-old quarterback, but would have considered doing so if Rodgers made some changes: no spots on McAfee’s show and attendance at all mandatory practices among other conditions. Rodgers missed two such practices last season.
In recent years, Rodgers has been outspoken in his opposition to being vaccinated against Covid-19, telling McAfee as much during a number of appearances. Rodgers got a number of facts wrong about the virus during a pit stop on McAfee’s show in 2021, but that didn’t stop him from complaining about being “in the crosshairs of the woke mob.”
Those opinions later earned Rodgers the attention of fellow vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Donald Trump has picked for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Rodgers also got into hot water on McAfee’s show for other controversial comments. In a Jan. 2024 appearance, he suggested that late night host Jimmy Kimmel was on a list of associates of deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein—though he wasn’t.
On Sunday, Fox Sports reported that the Jets would be moving on from Rodgers.
