‘He’s lobbed one of the best goalkeepers in history’ – The making of Jhon Duran’s glorious goal
With Aston Villa in desperate need of some late inspiration, enter Jhon Duran.
Villa’s man of the moment dislikes his status as the super-sub but another outstanding goal, on such a big stage, will only enhance his growing reputation.
The £14 million signing from Chicago Fire now has six goals in all competitions, with five now coming from the bench, and this could be the most memorable of the lot.
Telegraph Sport examines how Duran’s latest contribution condemned Bayern Munich to their first defeat in a Champions League group game since September 2017.

Shrewd substitution
Ollie Watkins produced another relentless, roadrunner performance up front and was clearly tiring when Unai Emery introduced his 20-year-old Colombian 20 minutes from the end.
Duran has found first-team starts difficult to come by, with Watkins having such a consistent appearance record, but always seems ready when he comes on.
With four goals already from the bench this season, Duran is the king of chaos and frequently finds some magic from somewhere.
The Pau Torres pass
Eleven minutes from time, and with the game stretched, Pau Torres breaks from defence with the ball after a throw from Emiliano Martinez.
Duran bursts clear from the halfway line, staying marginally onside, but it still requires Torres to produce an inch-perfect pass.
Torres has arguably been one of Villa’s most underrated players since his arrival from Villarreal and his 40-yard pass dissects the Bayern defence to find Duran on the shoulder of Dayot Upamecano.
Duran’s fabulous finish
Spotting Manuel Neuer off his line, Duran waits for the ball to bounce into his path, holding off Upamecano before hooking a remarkable shot over the head of the Bayern goalkeeper.
Questions will inevitably be asked over Neuer’s positioning, but for Duran to display such quick thinking only underlines why he is so highly rated.
He has scored one of the great European goals for Villa and the first in the Champions League at this famous old stadium since Paolo Rossi for Juventus in 1983.
Martinez, another Villa hero with a fine late save in added time, said of Duran: “He’s been on fire and came back with a different mentality for this season.
“He’s a super-sub and the first time he’s touched the ball he’s lobbed one of the best goalkeepers in history.”
The planning
Speaking after the match, Emery explained that Villa had planned to exploit Neuer’s unusually high position.
“In the analysis we did, we were speaking about how the position of Neuer is usually high,” the Villa manager said. “Some players have the talent to shoot early and when Jhon Duran has the ball he can score immediately.
“He scored a similar goal last year against Hibernian. Pau Torres passed behind the defence and that time he dribbled past the goalkeeper. This time he shot first time.”
