Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin felt Duk’s move was the best for both parties after the forward sealed a transfer to Spain.

The former Benfica player signed for La Liga side Leganes for an undisclosed fee, six months after going on strike in a bid to force a move.

The former fan favourite was eventually welcomed back to Pittodrie after the summer transfer window closed when he didn't get the move he wanted after failing to report back for pre-season training.

Duk hit 27 goals in 113 appearances and left Pittodrie for a fee before his contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

Thelin said: “Duk has spoken for some time about his desire to try and make the next step in his career. When that happens, I want to ensure all our focus is on the players who can drive Aberdeen towards our objectives.

“His attitude and application since September cannot be faulted and we thank him for his efforts, and of course, for his contribution to the club over the last few years.”

A club statement added: “Everyone at Aberdeen Football Club would like to thank Duk for his effort and contribution whilst at Pittodrie and wish him all the best in his future in La Liga.”
