Ange Postecoglou once again proved absolutely vital when it came to Tottenham strengthening their squad in the January transfer market. Appearing to have lost out on the signing of Bayern Munich ace Mathys Tel, there was a late twist on the final day of the transfer window as the Frenchman sealed a loan move to Spurs.

Tel's decision to sign on the dotted line in N17 all came about after a phone call with Postecoglou. As he has done numerous times during his time as Tottenham boss, the 59-year-old sold his vision to a player with his brand of football and it worked.

Postecoglou's words are extremely powerful, with footage of his team talks during his time as Australia boss showing players buying into his plan and hanging on his every word. Players would run through a brick wall for him and it's perhaps not hard to see why once he starts speaking.

After a frustrating season at the Allianz Arena with limited football coming his way under Vincent Kompany, Postecoglou is exactly the manager Tel needs to help finish his season on a high. Whether he plays up front or on the wing, the 19-year-old can thrive in the head coach's system and score the goals to shoot Tottenham up the league table and compete for silverware.

In his first interview as a Spurs player, Tel mentioned that he "spoke with the president, talked with the manager" and "felt the commitment". Asked in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Liverpool game about his chat with the attacker, Postecoglou gave an insight into their conversation.

"People need to understand we're talking about a 19-year-old player with a major decision, it's not so much about rejecting us or anyone," he explained. "He wanted to be comfortable with the decision. He didn’t want to be pushed in a certain direction, credit to him.

"I had a conversation with him and purely around the football and that I think he’ll find a great place here in terms of where he is in his career. We've shown, irrespective of age, he'll get an opportunity and the way we play will suit him and what we have in the next few months and beyond it's a perfect fit.

"It's right that it took as long as it did so he's comfortable with it. That he took so much time and was diligent, and made the decision when he had options, it meant the right mentality, right player, he’s ambitious, with self belief and self confidence and feels he can reach the very top."

Tel is not the first player to opt for Tottenham over other clubs because of Postecoglou and he certainly won't be the last.

After all, Lucas Bergvall chose Tottenham over Barcelona, James Maddison headed for north London rather than the north east and Radu Dragusin rejected Bayern Munich for Spurs. Speaking 12 months ago, the Romanian pointed to Postecoglou's key role in his final decision.

“Yes, that is right. I chose Tottenham because I felt it was the right step for me and I had a really good conversation with the coach," he admitted.

“I saw that they wanted me from a long time ago, like one month before the transfer window, so I thought this is the right choice for me. I really believe in this team and that it is a good environment for me to continue my career and to progress in this incredible stadium and teammates.”

James Maddison also revealed Postecoglou's major influence on his Tottenham move and what the head coach actually said that stuck with him.

"Being a Spurs player now is something I’m very excited about. I feel a hunger about the place," revealed Tottenham's No.10. "You come here and get a feel for the club, for the people.

"Speaking to the manager is very important. To have a decent chat with him and get his thoughts on how he sees Spurs going this season. He said, “Whether you come or not, you’ll see a completely different Spurs team under me” and it kind of stuck with me that he said that. It made me think that is the self-belief I have in myself.

"I spoke to Daniel [Levy] as well and they both spoke very highly of everything about the club, about me and things like that are so important. Building a good relationship with him, with Daniel, speaking to other players."

Postecoglou is perhaps Tottenham's biggest transfer weapon when it comes to Johan Lange getting deals over the line. Any players with doubts over a Spurs switch just needs to speak to the boss on the phone and that more often than not convinces them that Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is the place to be.

The Australian has confessed that he doesn't try to sell anything to prospective new signings. Instead, it is simply a conversation about what he believes and his thoughts on them as players and how they can be used in his system.

"I don't try to sell anything. It's just a conversation," he said in January 2024 when speaking about Dragusin's move to the club. "With Timo [Werner] too and any player I've signed, it's just a conversation about what I believe and my thoughts on them as players, where I see them fitting in. And trying to create a picture in their heads about what they'll encounter when they get here and what they're trying to build and the rest is up to them.

"Part of the key for me is they want to come to this football club. I'm not going to bend their arm or try to convince them. Part of it is them getting excited about having to come to us."

Players do indeed get excited to come to Tottenham after a talk with Postecoglou, with Tel the latest example after moving on loan from Bayern this week. Postecoglou is a major asset to Tottenham in the transfer window and long may it continue.
