Stoke City chairman and owner John Coates has sent a message to supporters following the appointment of Mark Robins as manager.

Stoke, who have started the new year with a different boss for each of the last three years, are taking on Plymouth Argyle at the bet365 Stadium (12.30pm) with Robins on the sidelines after he was brought in to replace Narcis Pelach.

Robins inherits a team sitting 19th in the Championship, having not been able to finish in the top half since relegation in 2018, but the side has been buoyed by a win over Sunderland and draw at Burnley in two games under caretaker boss Ryan Shawcross.

Following the drama over the last couple of weeks, Coates has sent an email to fans saying: "I would first of all like to wish you a happy New Year and to assure you that what drives me more than anything as we enter 2025 is making Stoke City successful for our fans.

"As we prepare to welcome supporters to the bet365 Stadium for the first time this year, we will do so with renewed optimism following the appointment of Mark Robins as our new manager. With the proven track record Mark brings to the role from what he achieved over a period of more than seven years at Coventry City, I believe this is a genuinely exciting moment for Stoke City.

"Having taken the Sky Blues from League Two to the Championship in the space of three seasons, the most recent two campaigns saw Mark twice take his side to Wembley, in the 22/23 playoffs and for an FA Cup semi-final earlier this year. The fact that Mark sees Stoke City as the place to fulfil his future ambitions in the game is testament to the potential we have as a club. He has our full support in his endeavours to build a new dynasty of success here in the Potteries.

"I’m looking forward to hearing the reception when you welcome him to the dugout for the first time, and how you get behind the team as you always do. I believe the recent matches against Sunderland and Burnley, with the way our players competed on the field and connected with the fans, have provided a glimpse of the kind of special moments we can come together to create at our club.

"For your backing of Ryan Shawcross and the team, and for your continuing and unwavering support, you and your fellow Potters have my sincere thanks. "
