John Cooney's family thank the people of Belfast for their kindness as book of condolence to be opened
John Cooney's family and his partner have thanked "the people of Belfast and the wider boxing community" for the kindness they have shown them in the wake of the boxer's death.
In a statement released by MHD Promotions, John's parents Hughie and Tina, his brothers Conor and Aaron and his fiancée Emmaleen, said they were "overwhelmed by the kindness bestowed upon them" at this difficult time.
They also thanked the Europa Hotel for their support and the "incredible staff" at the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

The statement added that Mr and Mrs Cooney would take "great solace" knowing the untimely loss of their son will now help save the lives of others.

Meanwhile the Ulster Hall will be opening its doors from 9am to 9pm on Monday 10 February for the general public and boxing community to come and sign a book of condolence for John.
