John Townley's Aston Villa player ratings as trio impress in frustrating 1-1 West Ham draw
Aston Villa extended their unbeaten run at home in the Premier League to 11 games, but failed to beat West Ham after being held 1-1 at Villa Park.
Having started on the front foot, Villa broke the deadlock in the eighth minute as Jacob Ramsey played a one-two with Ollie Watkins, before he powered past Vladimir Coufal and squeezed the ball into the far corner. After assisting Ramsey's opener, Watkins has reached 100 goal involvements in the fewest Premier League games (169) by any player since Kevin De Bruyne achieved the milestone in 155 matches in July 2020.
The first half was marred by the knee injury which Tyrone Mings suffered as he appeared to clash knees with Mohammed Kudus. The 31-year-old received treatment for a few minutes and initially carried on.

Shortly after, Mings pulled up and signalled to come off before heading down the tunnel holding his shirt to his face looking devastated. Ian Maatsen replaced Mings and Lucas Digne shuffled across to left centre-back alongside Ezri Konsa.
After Lucas Paqueta swiveled in the box and fired wide from close range, West Ham were denied an equaliser when Ezri Konsa blocked Carlos Soler’s effort from a tight angle. Not long after, Emerson levelled the game for visitors by heading in at the back post in the 70th minute.
Villa are next in action on Wednesday when they take on Celtic for the final Champions League league phase clash, before returning to league duties on Saturday against Wolves at Molineux.
Player ratings
Emi Martinez
Martinez was looking to keep his second clean sheet in three league games and his third at Villa Park this term, but conceded when Emerson headed past him at the far post. 6
Matty Cash
Cash had a difficult task on his hands in the second half as West Ham loaded the ball at the back post with regularity. New signing Donyell Malen - who made his debut - has a lot to learn to help his right-back out in the defensive phase. 6
Ezri Konsa
Konsa made an excellent block to deny Soler from equalising just after the hour mark after Martinez dropped the ball following a collision with Cash. Stepped up when Mings came off. 8
Tyrone Mings
It was devastating to see Mings come off with another knee problem. Can only pray it's nothing serious. Until then he was having a fine game and his injury was a turning point. 7
Lucas Digne
Digne played in his 100th Premier League game for the club this evening. He was asked to shuffle across to centre-back alongside Konsa for most of the game following the injury suffered by Mings. 6
Boubacar Kamara
Another strong, combative performance from Kamara. It had to be considering the physicality in West Ham's midfield. He got Soucek in the book after breezing forward to lead a counter-attack before being stopped by the Czech international. 8
Youri Tielemans
Tielemans picked the lock a few times in the first half, punching progressive passes towards Rogers whenever the forward picked up a dangerous position in between the lines. 6
Leon Bailey
Bailey was hooked early in the second half against Monaco and many expected him to make way for Malen from the off today. He started the game well, lofting the ball over to Rogers before Kilman blocked the England international's cross. Faded in and out. 6
Morgan Rogers
West Ham struggled to pick Rogers up early on such was his intelligent movement and craft on the ball. Unfortunate to be taken off in the 73rd minute because he was a genuine threat and occupied the opposition midfielders. 7
Jacob Ramsey
Ramsey returned to the side as the only change Emery made from the starting XI he picked against Monaco in midweek. He scored his first league goal of the season by finding the far corner having been played in by Watkins. His work off the ball from a defensive perspective was excellent. Something to build on now. 8
Ollie Watkins
Watkins marked his 200th Villa appearance with an impressive performance at the top of the pitch. He assisted Ramsey for his goal, but will feel like he should have scored himself when he glanced a header past the far post from close range in the first half. 7
SUBS
Ian Maatsen (for Mings, 38'): After a tricky start coming into a game full of intensity, Maatsen started to settle into it in the second half, but his final ball was lacking today. 5
Donyell Malen (for Bailey, 66'): Malen looked bright in attack, striking at goal not long after coming on. He has much to learn from a defensive point of view as Villa were caught out at the back post on a few occasions. 6
Jhon Duran (for Watkins, 66'): Duran was feeding off scraps when he came on. 6
Emi Buendia (for Ramsey, 73'): Buendia didn't really get in the game as Villa lacked control in the first half. N/A
John McGinn (for Rogers, 73'): It was the same case for McGinn. Great to see him back after a hamstring issue. N/A
Subs not used: Olsen, Zych, Bogarde, Garcia.
GOALS
Aston Villa: Ramsey (8')
