Aston Villa are in the hat for the fifth round of the FA Cup after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Villa Park.

Jacob Ramsey opened the scoring inside the first minute and Morgan Rogers doubled Villa's lead just after the hour mark, before Mathys Tel's scored late for the visitors. The victory means Villa have progressed past the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time in a decade when they went all the way to the final in 2015.

Ramsey’s early opener was the product of a fine move from Villa which started at the back with Emi Martinez, who played the ball to Lucas Digne to progress play and find Morgan Rogers. On the turn, Rogers powered forward and found Jacob Ramsey in space, before he fired at goal to beat Antonin Kinsky.

Leon Bailey enjoyed one of his best halves of football for some time and forced Kinsky into making a couple of important saves, one of which presented Ramsey with the chance to double his tally and Villa’s lead. From a tight angle, Ramsey struck the post.

Villa lost Ezri Konsa through injury in the 26th minute after he appeared to suffer a muscle problem when chasing back. Replaced by Lamare Bogarde, the young versatile defender made a brilliant block to deny Son Heung-min early in the second period.

Before Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio were introduced in the 66th minute, Rogers made it 2-0 by slamming in from close range after Donyell Malen pulled the ball across the box.

Rashford and Asensio both dazzled in the final 30 minutes of the game as the Villa Park crowd enjoyed themselves by singing chants for their new winter recruits.

Villa are next in action on Saturday when they host Ipswich Town in the Premier League (3pm kick-off).

Player ratings

Emi Martinez

Martinez made a top save in the 24th minute to deny Son from close range. He commanded his box well, but was beaten late on and will be frustrated not to have kept a clean sheet. 8

Andres Garcia

Garcia made his home debut this evening as Emery picked him ahead of Bogarde in the right-back role. He was confident in the final third and read the game well by intercepting a few passes as Spurs tried to play out. 7

Ezri Konsa

Villa's injury crisis in defence continues after Konsa suffered a suspected muscle injury halfway through the first period. 7

Boubacar Kamara

Kamara continued at centre-back as Tyrone Mings works his way back to full fitness. He was joined by Bogarde from the 26th minute onwards after Konsa's injury blow. 8

Lucas Digne

Digne was key to Villa's opening goal as he progressed the play initially. Another superb showing from the full-back. 8

John McGinn

McGinn was too powerful for Spurs' midfielders at times - he uses his low centre of gravity so well. Helped Bogarde and Garcia out on the right side. Worked an brilliant chance for Ramsey to extend the lead just before the hour mark, but his effort was saved. 8

Youri Tielemans

The Belgian was always looking to make the forward pass and advanced through the pitch well at times. He had a chance to get a shot on target before the 20th minute, but his effort went wide of the post. 7

Leon Bailey

Bailey came back into the side after coming on for the start of the second half in the defeat at Wolves. He started the game well and called Kinsky into action in the 18th minute when he pushed the winger's effort around the post. A really encouraging display from the winger. 7

Morgan Rogers

Rogers was unplayable on the turn. He assisted Ramsey's early opener after making space to drive into and produce. He then took the game away from Tottenham by firing Villa into a 2-0 lead. 9

Jacob Ramsey

Ramsey kept his place on the left and put down another marker to justify his inclusion from the off by scoring. The 23-year-old is in his strongest vein of form since suffering his first foot injury in the summer of 2023. He passed up on a few chances to extend Villa's advantage. 8

Donyell Malen

Malen made his first start for Villa, replacing the injured Ollie Watkins at the top of the pitch. He had a few chances to score in the first half, but didn't take them. Despite that, it's been an impressive start to life as a Villa player for the Dutchman, who was very unlucky to see a debut goal chalked off last week. 7

SUBS

Lamare Bogarde (for Konsa, 26'): Bogarde made a terrific block to deny Son early in the second half. Despite coming on halfway through the first period, Bogarde looked comfortable in defence next to Kamara. 7

Marcus Rashford (for Malen, 66'): Rashford looked confident on the ball and kept his position well, just in off the left flank. Clearly has bags of ability, but we knew that already. 7

Marco Asensio (for Bailey, 66'): Gave the Villa fans something to cheer moments after coming on as he performed a roulette to create space and keep possession. More flicks and tricks to come. 8

Ian Maatsen (for Digne, 81'): N/A

Subs not used: Olsen, Zych, Jimoh-Aloba.

GOALS

Aston Villa: Ramsey (1'), Rogers (65')

Tottenham: Tel (90')
