Johnny Russell puts SPFL clubs on transfer alert following Sporting Kansas City exit
Former Scotland international Johnny Russell has put SPFL clubs on alert after his departure from Sporting Kansas City was announced.
The ex-Dundee United star is now a free agent after parting ways with the MLS club following a remarkable seven years where he became the most prolific Scot in the league's history. Since moving Stateside from Derby County in 2018, Russell racked up 232 appearances for Sporting KC, scoring 67 goals and contributing 39 assists. He has captained the club over the last five seasons and ended the campaign with ten goal contributions.
However, it was a season to forget for SKC as they finished 13th in the Western Conference, missing out on the play-off places. Sporting KC have made it clear they plan to overhaul a roster that finished with the second-worst record in the club's history but paid tribute to outgoing legend Russell after opting against renewing his contract.

The club wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "Our 9th captain in club history, you inspired generations on and off the pitch. Thank you for everything, Johnny." The official MLS account also recognised Russell's immense contribution, adding: "Forever a pleasure, salute to the Sporting KC LEGEND Johnny Russell."
While it remains to be seen what the future holds for Russell, the 14-times capped star won't be short of options back home should he return to the SPFL. After gaining experience out on loan at Forfar and Raith Rovers, Russell became a hero at Tannadice by notching 45 goals in 119 outings for the club.
His sensational form attracted the interest of boyhood club Celtic, but a deal could not be struck and Russell headed south with Derby County, where he spent five years before moving to the USA.
