Jones delighted to end 'emotional week' at Wanderers on a high
Gethin Jones hailed his team-mates’ resilience as Wanderers’ “gameplan” paid off against Huddersfield Town.
Jones was part of a brilliant defensive effort against the Terriers as the Whites secured a big three points on the road.
The Australia international insisted it was a real team effort, with every player putting in a shift to protect the clean sheet.
“We had a gameplan to come here and frustrate them,” he said. “Obviously, playing away from home and I think we stuck to the gameplan very well, and we took our chance when it came. Collo (Aaron Collins) has taken it well.
“We thought we could have maybe gone two or three up towards the end, but we dug deep. We knew it was going to be a really difficult game coming here but everyone stuck to their jobs.
“The gameplan, I think it suited this game perfectly with the way they play. We sat back a bit, we didn't chase as much as we normally do and I think we just frustrated them.
“You could feel it in the stadium, the fans were getting agitated. Huddersfield weren't getting into their normal flow and that was our plan, to frustrate them.
“Then when we did get the ball, we tried to look for our forward players as soon as we could and tried and get chances off that.”
Jones admitted it had been an “emotional week” following Ian Evatt’s exit after four-and-a-half-years in charge.
The defender is one of only three players still at the club from the start of Evatt’s reign along with Ricardo Santos and George Thomason.
Reflecting on the past few years, Jones said: “I loved it. It was obviously a very emotional week for everyone.
“I can only thank Ian Evatt for bringing me in and for me to be here for four-and-a-half really good years.
“Now, we are looking at something new and hopefully we can move on with that and do well for the remainder of the season.
“It has been an emotional week for a lot of us but when we came in on Thursday, we had a meeting and then we were straight away concentrated on this game, and we have come out as winners.”
Jones says Julian Darby, Andy Taylor and Andrew Tutte have been “brilliant” since taking interim charge and was delighted to repay their efforts with three points at the John Smith’s Stadium.
“It has been really good,” he continued. “Obviously, all those lads on Thursday who didn't play on Tuesday night went out to do some training – a short, sharp session. All the lads enjoyed it.
“We got the confidence in and then worked hard on what our gameplan was going to be for today.
“Everyone has taken it on board really well, we stuck to the gameplan and we have done exactly what Julian Darby and Tayls wanted us to do.
“Tuttey been amazing as well with us, it has good to have him back. He joined in training on Thursday so that was good. They have all been brilliant.”
The Bolton backline came up against Dion Charles, who was still a Wanderer less than a fortnight ago.
Jones admitted it was “strange” but insisted it was business as usual once they stepped over the white line.
“Obviously, a few of us know Dion quite well,” he explained. “We said no-one speak to him before the game.
“We came out, we saw the Huddersfield lads on the pitch and we just walked past each other. As the game is played, you forget who your mates are when you are on the pitch.
“Then as soon as the final whistle went, I went up to Dion and said well done, good to see him again and I hope it all goes well for him there.
“It was strange because we know what his strengths are and he will know what our strengths are. But it was good to see him again.”
