The NBA handed Toronto Raptors two-way player Jontay Porter a lifetime ban today for "disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games," per a league statement.

Porter is just the second NBA player since 2000 to be banned from the league. The other was O.J. Mayo in 2016 but his was a two-year ban. Porter's the first player to receive a lifetime ban since Roy Tarpley of the Dallas Mavericks was banned for life in 1995.

Who is Jontay Porter?

Porter is the younger brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. The Columbia, Missouri native joined his brother to play with the Missouri Tigers in the 2017-18 season. He entered the 2018 NBA Draft, like his brother, but went undrafted and returned to Missouri for a second season.

That year saw him suffer multiple injuries that kept him off the court all year and he was not selected in the 2019 NBA Draft. In March 2020, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies and later played 11 games in the 2020-21 season.

He played the 2022 NBA Summer League with the Nuggets before two stops in the G League with the Wisconsin Herd and Motor City Cruise, the affiliates of the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons, respectively.

Porter signed a two-way contract with the Raptors for the 2023-24 season. He played in 26 games and started five of them, averaging 4.4 points per game.

According to Spotrac, Porter earned $2.3 million over three seasons from the Grizzlies:

  • 2019-20: $197,933 (impacted by COVID-19-shortened season)

  • 2020-21: $1,900,000

Per Hoops Hype, his two-way contract with the Raptors in the 2023-24 is valued at $411,794. That brings his career total from the NBA to $2.7 million.
