Jordan Dyer said it is ‘quite rare’ for him to get two goals in a game after the Torquay United defender struck twice in the Gulls’ 3-1 win against Welling United on Saturday.

But the 23-year-old headed Torquay in front in just the third minute of the game, and made it 2-1 after a dodgy start to the second half that allowed Welling to get back into it, before Cody Cooke got the third in the 88th minute to finish them off.

It was quite a performance by Dyer, who has shown such fortitude this season, after joining the club from Bath City in the summer. Keep this up and he will be a contender for Player of the Year in April - he really has been that solid at the back.

“It’s something that is quite rare for me,” said Dyer. “It was nice to be able to contribute for the lads and get three points. It was tough out there, as every game at this level is. It wasn’t easy for us and they did throw a little bit at us in the second half. We didn’t start right in the second half and they got back into the game - and luckily I was able to help the team and then Cody finished them off.”

The win came after that horrible 5-1 FA Trophy defeat at Worthing - and there might have been a few nerves going into this game. But with Welling being one of only three teams to have beaten the Gulls in the National League South this season, there was also some payback to shell out, as well as last week’s result to bounce back from.

Dyer said: “It shows our mentality that we are able to get back into the game. Even when they did slightly get on top, we were able to show that we have the quality to come through and win the game.

“There’s no chance we are going to let teams beat us twice, we are going to try to do all we can. We did say in the huddle we owed them one and luckily we came away with three points.”

Torquay’s 13-game winning streak in all games might have gone at Worthing, but they are still 12 games unbeaten in the league now - and they haven’t lost a game at home yet.

Dyer, who has formed a brilliant partnership in the centre of defence with fellow newbie Sam Dreyer this season, said: “Momentum is a massive thing. It works both ways. When you are struggling it is hard to get out of and when you are winning it is also hard to stay on top of.

"But you have to use that, you have to use your confidence. We are a fit side. If it is 0-0 in the 85th minute we know we can still win the game. At 1-0 down we can always get results. “We have got to believe in our process. We are a new side. We have not played loads of games together.”

Torquay, on 50 points now, are two points clear of Maidstone United at the top of the table, with game 26 at St Albans City next weekend.
