Jordan Henderson has let rip at a reporter who questioned if he wanted to leave Ajax.

The veteran midfielder, who lifted the Premier League title with Liverpool in 2020, had the Ajaz armband taken off him for their midweek Europa League clash with Galatasaray after reportedly demanding a move to Ligue 1 Monaco. However he has now denied that, and slammed a reporter for questioning his dedication to the Dutch giants.

Ajax coach Francesco Farioli was told by club bosses that he was free to select the former Liverpool midfielder - but he then decided to make keeper Remco Pasveer captain for the evening. Henderson played for 75 minutes before being forced off by cramp. But Henderson cut a frustrated figure when speaking to the media. He was asked: "Why did you want to make a transfer to Monaco?" sniping back: "Based on what?"

When he was told that coach Farioli had spoken about the move, the 34-year-old responded: "The coach told you that I wanted to go to Monaco? Because I had a big offer? It’s not true. Did Ajax say they wanted to sell us? Well they were negotiating so I’d imagine that they did. They were negotiating a fee, it’s not about details. I know the truth, I know what happened, I’m not here to give you details. I don’t need to give details. It sounds like you can. 99 percent of it was untrue."

He was then asked how Faroili convinced him to stay with the club, responding: "It wasn’t him. I didn’t need convinced to stay. Nobody convinced us, why are you going into the details? I don’t need to sit here and defend. You don’t know the information. I clapped the crowd when I went off."

Farioli meanwhile stressed that Henderson was still Ajax skipper, despite not wearing the armband midweek. He said: "Yes, he is the captain of Ajax. Why should I lose an important player, a key player as he is? There’s no reason. I think he’s showing his character, his leadership. The armband is just a piece you’re wearing, nothing more than that."
