Jordan Henderson appears to have been stripped of the Ajax captaincy as he continues to try and force a move away from the club. News emerged on Thursday that the former Liverpool midfielder was keen to move to Monaco before Monday’s deadline.

It has been claimed that the Ligue 1 side are in the market for an experienced midfielder and want to sign Henderson but are unwilling to pay a fee because of his age. The England international still has a year remaining on his contract at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

And although he played 77 minutes before being substituted for Ajax in the Europa League against Galatasaray on Thursday night, Henderson did not lead his side out. Francesco Farioli handed the armband to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer instead.

Asked about Henderson’s situation after his side’s 2-1 win, Farioli said: "I’m not going to speak about the market. I hear something else every hour. If I start to follow everything, I will start getting mad.

"If I could have a clear answer about the situation, I’d be more happy to give it, not just about Jordan but about everything we read every two hours."

Meanwhile, Dutch publication De Telegraaf believes Henderson’s situation in Amsterdam could get worse. They report that Ajax have been left 'astonished' by Henderson's desire to depart but have no desire to let him leave, as they are in a fight to finish in the top two in Eredivisie and therefore qualify for next season’s Champions League.

However, the same report claims that Henderson is ready to make it clear he doesn't want to play for Ajax any more - even if his move to Monaco is blocked. Prior to joining Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2023, Henderson enjoyed a trophy-laden 12-year spell at Liverpool. During his time at Anfield, he won the Premier League, Champions League, two League Cups and one FA Cup.
