Jordan Houghton: Plymouth Argyle players excited for Liverpool challenge
Plymouth Argyle are in a positive mindset going into the Emirates FA Cup fourth round tie against Liverpool at Home Park tomorrow, according to midfielder Jordan Houghton.
The Pilgrims caused a big upset in the previous round when they went to Premier League club Brentford and won 1-0. They have also picked up four points from their last two Championship matches against top six sides, drawing 2-2 away to Sunderland and beating West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at Home Park last Saturday.
So while Liverpool's results and performances this season would suggest they are one of the best sides in the world, Argyle's recent form has given them some confidence to take into the contest. Houghton said: "I'm really looking forward to it. It's such a big game. Everyone is excited for it. It's going to be a great occasion.

"We are excited for the challenge, we are positive going into it off the back of a couple of good results in the league and obviously the last round as well. They probably are the best team in the world at the moment and to have that challenge is something we are really looking forward to, myself definitely.
"It's something I pride my career on, coming from a top academy (at Chelsea) and being close to a first team environment there, to then get chances to go up against the best again is something I work day in day out to try and do.
"I know these opportunities don't come around very often so you have to take it with both hands. Obviously, they (Liverpool) have got such great players across the pitch, they might make a few changes. I know they have got some games in short succession.
"I imagine there will be a few changes but those players to come in are going to be top quality as well. We will have our game plan that the manager sets out, like he does for every game."
While the FA Cup clash against Liverpool will be a huge test for Argyle, Houghton believes there is less pressure on it than the home Championship match against Millwall next Wednesday, with Pilgrims in desperate need of points to try to climb off the bottom of the table.
Houghton said: "The bread and butter is the league. Wednesday is the bigger game as such. We have come off two good league performances and picking up points.
"We need to carry on doing that but also Sunday isn't just a free hit either. We want to put a good performance on and show what we can do, and hopefully upset them like we did in the last round."
Home Park is sold out for the visit of Liverpool, who will have around of their supporters in the Barn Park, so it promises to be quite an occasion.
"It always is," said Houghton. "I have been lucky enough to experience quite a lot of brilliant atmospheres here. I'm expecting it to be a great one, especially with the away fans coming. They will have a slightly larger allocation than we are used to for league games so I'm really looking forward to experiencing that."
The clash against Liverpool brings back memories for Houghton of when he played for Argyle against then European champions Chelsea in a FA Cup fourth round tie at Stamford Bridge in February 2022 and they took them to extra-time before losing 2-1.
Houghton said: "That was up there with one of the best days as an Argyle player, up there with the promotion and the survival last season. "They (Chelsea) were the European champions at the time. It was probably not too dis-similar to this challenge now, in terms of their status.
"They were up there with probably one of the best teams in Europe and we are going to be going up against one of the best, if not the best. Hopefully we can put on that same performance but come out with a slightly different result."
Houghton added about the Chelsea tie: "On another day they might have scored double figures, it was one of those, but we did put in a good performance as well. To take them to extra-time I think was a real testament to us as a team. If we can put in a performance like that and be resolute and hard to beat, and then work from that as we build into the game, who knows?"
