Jorginho ‘lucky’ to escape Arsenal red card after ‘lash out’ on Brighton player in unseen footage
Jamie Redknapp has told Jorginho he was “lucky” that he did not make heavy contact with Brighton & Hove Albion defender Joel Veltman after the Arsenal midfielder appeared to produce a leg swipe towards his marker.
The two players had a brief altercation outside of the penalty ‘D’ as Joao Pedro stepped up to slot the ball away for the home side’s equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 draw - an incident not initially picked up by the live TV broadcast.
Jorginho was readying himself to run in and potentially clear the ball in the event David Raya saved the spot kick but Veltman came in to try and block him. Jorginho didn’t take too kindly to this and appeared to aggressively kick out backwards with his studs up in the direction of Veltman.

It didn’t look as though the Italian made any connection, despite Veltman falling to the ground. But had he had made clear contact, and had it been spotted by the VAR officials, the 33-year-old might have been in hot water.
Sky Sports showed the incident after full-time during the analysis and Jamie Redknapp believes Jorginho trod a fine line in that moment. “Jorginho was quite lucky here because if he catches him he could have been in trouble and got a red card,” he said as the clip was played.
Fellow pundit Steve Sidwell added: “You can see it’s a bit of a lash out and if it’s more a connection…” Another clip showed Declan Rice shouting something as Pedro was running up to take the penalty in an act of gamesmanship that yielded no result.
Jorginho was starting his first Premier League game for nearly a month and was handed the captain’s armband for the contest. The Euro 2020 winner - who penned a one-year extension over the summer - has started just six league fixtures this season.
